A little Butterwell Blooms update 🌱

Taking a step back this year has given me a lot of time to think about what I want this little business to be when I get properly stuck back into growing next year.

The answer is quite simple. I want to grow.

More flowers, more foliage, more perennials, more interesting varieties and unusual goodies.

I’ve got lots to figure out over the next few months, but it feels good to be putting the growing side of Butterwell Blooms firmly back at the heart of things.

And if you’re a florist in Cornwall who likes working with seasonal, locally grown flowers… perhaps watch this space 👀🌿

I nearly didn’t make this little arrangement.

The flowers aren’t perfect. The anemones are drooping because I didn’t have time to condition them properly, the tansy is past its best and there isn’t a huge amount left to pick from the field.

I cut them during nap time and then arranged them with a baby in the carrier, who was determined to grab at every flower within reach.

A year ago, I probably wouldn’t have bothered. My perfectionist brain would have decided there wasn’t enough of the right thing, or that the flowers weren’t good enough to make something worth photographing.

But I’m trying to get better at starting with what I’ve got.

And actually, I really like this. It’s a little bit tired and a little bit scruffy (like me!), but it’s made from flowers I grew, at a time when I’m finding my feet again.

I keep coming back to this:

Start where you are.
Use what you have.
Do what you can.

It's funny how much can change in a year.

This time last summer I was busy picking flowers, making bouquets and planning for the seasons ahead, with no idea just how different life would look a few months later.

Since then, I've become a mum.

The past few months have been spent embracing a slower pace of life. Long walks, afternoons at the beach, being nap trapped (as I am while I write this!) and getting to know the tiniest little person. It's been a season I'll always treasure.

Meanwhile, the flower field has carried on without me. The weeds have certainly had their moment, but so have the bees, butterflies and birds. Nature has taken every opportunity, and in many ways it's been wonderful to see the patch so full of life.

Now, with my little sidekick three months old, it feels like the right time to find my way back here too.

The field will take some time to bring back into full production, so I won't be selling flowers again until next spring. Instead of rushing it, I'm going to spend the coming months restoring the patch, planting for the future, and building strong foundations for the seasons ahead.

Growing has always taught me to work with the seasons rather than against them, and this season has simply looked a little different.

Thank you for sticking around. I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with you again. 🌸
