The Norbreck castle Hotel started its reign as a manor house in 1869 and became a hotel almost by accident. Mr J.H Shorrocks purchased the manor house in 1902 and turned it into a place where he could impress and entertain his friends for the weekend. In 1902 the manor house had only 18 bedrooms, no electricity or gas, no roads and a tin roofed Ballroom. Mr Shorrocks’ popularity grew rapidly and soon he started to take paying guests. He would have had little idea at the time that he was laying the foundations for what was to become one of the largest and most famous hotel and conference/exhibitions centers in the North of England.
In 1912 Mr Shorrocks formed a public trading company, also increasing the size of the hotel to its present expanse minus The Windsor Wing and Norcalympia Wing. There were trying times ahead during the 1914-1918 First World War, however in 1934 The Lord Mayor and Miss Frances Day (the famous stage and screen actress) opened the new wing including 200 bedrooms plus a magnificent convention hall and Ballroom with accommodation for 1200 people.
During The Second World War the hotel was commandeered by H.M Government and invaded by hordes of civil servants for 11 long years, eventually being handed back in 1950. Unfortunately Mr Shorrocks had not lived to see it. A new board of directors was formed and a totally refurbished hotel was opened in May 1952.
Then known as The Norbreck Hydro Hall it could boast car parking for 250 cars, 5 tennis courts, a 600 seat restaurant and 18 hole golf course, conference seating for 850 people and 400 bedrooms not to mention a swimming pool, cocktail bars and a playground for children. All this for just £100.000!
Since the grand re-opening in 1952 much of the land has been sold off for property development but enough remained for the construction of The Windsor Wing formerly The Motel and the giant conference complex The Norcalymia.
In the late 1970’s the hotel’s disco became the venue for a number of concerts by punk rock, new wave & mod revival bands. Those who played there included the Angelic Upstarts, Pe*******on and The Purple Hearts. The venue also saw gigs by two bands before they became famous. Adam & The Ants performed here when they were still a punk rock band in March 1979, a performance which One Way System drummer Dave Brown listed in his top 5 gigs and on 15th March 1979, The Pretenders played one of their first ever gigs at the Norbreck.
In 1988 the hotel was the venue for a conference where The Liberal Democratic Party merged to form The Liberal Democrats. On the 5th July 1991 Principle Hotels Group acquired the hotel and built the conservatory which was the largest in England at the time it was erected in 1995.
In June 2003 the hotel was sold to Britannia Hotels LTD whom completed a full refurbishment in January 2004. During Britannia Hotels ownership the hotel has added to its 380 bedrooms with over 100 rooms added. The figure currently stands at 487 Bedrooms.
