St Thomas' Church Hall The Church Hall has a large and a small hall available to hire for sessions, meetings and events. The St. Thomas' Church Hall is linked to St.

Thomas' Church, we take bookings for any group at a low charge. You can enquire on the website. There is a big hall (badminton court size) with a sizable stage. Then a still quite large but smaller room is next door with a large kitchen to the side of that. There is also a grass lawn with borders that has a nice view on to the back hills of Stanhope.

📣 Public Announcement – Setting the Record Straight

Weardale Makers Markets (WMM) would like to confirm that we will be returning to Stanhope from August through to December as planned.

Our July market date was rescheduled following a concerning situation in which an individual claiming to represent "Compliance and Standards NE" sent unsolicited emails to our venues.

These emails urged venues to exercise "extreme caution" and requested insurance and food safety documents, casting doubt on our operations.

To clarify and set the record straight:

✅ All of our traders hold valid Public Liability Insurance
✅ All relevant food traders provide up-to-date food hygiene certificates and safety documentation
✅ We are fully compliant with all industry standards

We have no knowledge of the identity or motives of the person behind these emails. However, we are incredibly grateful to our venue partners, who recognised the messages for what they were and continued to support us.

As always, we remain committed to providing safe, high-quality, handmade markets run with integrity and transparency. Thank you to our customers and traders for your continued support.

Neighbourhood Policing Week Update 🚓

Your local beat team have had a busy start to the week already, here are a few things we have been up to:

PC Ruddick and Patterson conducted patrols at the local primary school this morning.
Afterwards they attended an incident where there were concerns for a person. They safeguarded this individual and referred them to the appropriate services.

Community Safety Responders Lowther and Walton along with Police Community Support Officer Whitby attended the Dales Centre for our café drop-in. Our next one is tomorrow from 12:30 at Peggotys in Wolsingham. ☕

Following reports from Ruralwatch, a suspicious vehicle was stop checked. 🚗

CSRs Lowther and Walton conducted CCTV enquiries in relation to a recent burglary. 🎥

Patrols of Weardale have also been conducted. 🚓

Creation of Weardale to Bishop Auckland Pilgrimage Route ‘The Way of Hope’
The Way of Hope will broadly follow the existing Weardale Way, to run from Killhope to the Faith Museum at Auckland Castle. There are public meetings for businesses, landowners etc. along the route.
A meeting will be held at:
- St Thomas Church Hall, Stanhope on Thursday 27 February, 5 to 6:30 pm
- Cowshill and Lanehead Village Hall on Thursday 6 March, 5 to 6:30 pm
These are opportunities for businesses, landowners and other interested parties to see the proposed route and discuss the pros and cons from increasing visitor footfall to our area. Pilgrimage routes are used by a wide range of people for physical and mental well being, and the Northern Saints Trails have proved to be very popular. The Way of Hope will compliment the existing routes. We intend to soft launch the route at Weardale Agricultural Show in August 2025, and hope that it will encourage visitors to our area, using local accommodation and hospitality businesses.
All are welcome to attend.
