🔬 CHEMUK Industry News | Women in Science

Ahead of International Women's Day this Sunday, new research is shining a spotlight on the representation of women across the global scientific community.

According to a recent report covered by Royal Society of Chemistry publication Chemistry World, women remain significantly underrepresented within national scientific organisations despite making up around 31% of the global research workforce.

The study published by the International Science Council, InterAcademy Partnership, and the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science, found that women hold just 19% of national academy memberships on average, while fewer than one in five organisations are led by a woman.

Researchers say the imbalance is often driven not by formal barriers but by structural challenges such as nomination processes, informal networks, and unequal access to opportunities.

Encouragingly, progress is being made. Organisations, including the Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry () are reviewing policies and award structures to increase transparency and expand the pool of female candidates for scientific recognition.

As the global science and chemical industries mark International Women’s Day, the findings highlight both the progress achieved and the importance of continuing to support women across the scientific pipeline, from education and research through to leadership and recognition.
