Our historic Jewellery Quarter Birmingham
Discover the fascinating history behind 22 Frederick Street! Built in 1901 as a National Provincial Bank branch, this building is a treasure trove of stories. With separate entrances for clients and employees, a grand staircase to the manager's office, a large walk-in strong room, and a unique hoist to the first floor, it stands as a testament to Victorian architecture. 🏦✨
During WWI, Abrahall & Bint, known for their exquisite Gem Jewellery and Pearl Goods, traded here, specializing in rings, brooches, bracelets, and more. They also excelled in Municipal and Presentation Work. 💎💍
In 1921, the Birmingham Medal Co. was established, initially employing disabled ex-servicemen and known for their quality enamel badges and AA & RAC badges. After several relocations, they too found a home at 22 Frederick Street. 🏅🔧
Fast forward to 1988, Marie Haddleton and YBA Publications transformed the then semi-derelict 2nd floor. From launching The Hockley Flyer to publishing racing programs and local history guides, their contributions have left an indelible mark on the community. 📚🚀
Fun Fact: Outside 22 Frederick Street, you'll find a sculpture of the trolley Marie used to distribute The Hockley Flyer throughout the Jewellery Quarter! 🛒📬
