SEED SAVING COURSE 🫘 Here in the market garden, seed saving is a key part of our practice – with us growing a few organic seed crops each season for Vital Seeds as well as saving seeds of many different fruits, flowers and vegetables for our own needs the next season 🍅

Join us on Tuesday September 8th for a hands-on introduction to seed saving – covering basic plant s*x, isolation & crossing, selection, the importance of open-pollinated seed, collection techniques, wet and dry winnowing, germination tests, and everything else in-between!

You’ll leave being able to save on seed orders, help preserve agro-biodiversity, and empowered to select and save from strong, healthy and high yielding plants that can become adapted to your own climates, growing conditions and needs.

£25/pp including coffee and farm made cake! 🍰 Book now through the link in our bio 👈

We usually choose a mouth watering array of veg for this kind of post but it didn’t feel right this month.

You will find us Arundel Farmers Market this Saturday with some caveats – fewer lettuce heads than usual, no radishes, beets without tops, less salad mix… less flowers as we’ve been dry farming that block. The list goes on! Some crops are looking good but don’t be surprised if you find a slightly tougher bean in your lot of French or runner beans 😵‍💫

It has been an incredibly challenging season so far. We’re now watering using mains (on a meter!) to keep crops hydrated where our rain harvesting reservoir / pond ran out – we decided to invest and get it dug deeper this week – a cost we hope will be recovered next season as it should provide us a whole extra month’s worth of watering. With the long range forecast not showing any proper rain on the horizon, we want to thank you all who decide to shop local and support British organic farming EVEN when the quality may drop.

See you on Saturday and remember how precious water is when you next shower 🚿

A big week building up to Beltane ☀️

From our last big salad pick for Shrub in the polytunnel on Monday, to getting all of our summer tunnel crops in, to keeping up with the watering, and all the other planting, bed prep and weeding tasks that are on the list right now. It’s been a busy busy week here, but one with all the life of Spring surrounding the market garden 🌿The cuckoo has returned, the swallows are diving over the pond for insects and the geese fly by most nights.

This weekend we’ll have our produce with at their new farm shop and we’ll be turning up to Plaistow’s Maypole Fete with produce and plants galore 🥬

It’s only weeks now until our summer crops properly start to kick in, but in the meantime happy Beltane and we hope you have a good weekend 🌕
