When you first start wedding dress shopping, all the different silhouettes can feel a little overwhelming — especially when you’re trying to work out what will “suit” you.

But here’s our Rivers advice… forget the rules. 🤍

You don’t have to choose a certain silhouette because of your height, shape or size. And you definitely don’t need to know exactly what you’re looking for before you walk through our doors.

Sometimes the dress you’ve saved 100 times on Pinterest just doesn’t give you the feeling when you put it on… while the style you nearly didn’t try becomes your dress. 🥹✨

Sweetheart, square, scoop, off-the-shoulder, V-neck… there are so many beautiful options, but the secret is finding the one that makes you feel incredible. 🤍

One of the things we always say to our Rivers brides is don’t rule anything out before you try it on.

You might arrive convinced you want sleeves and a V-neck… and leave having fallen completely in love with a strapless sweetheart. 👰🏼‍♀️✨ It happens more often than you’d think!

Different necklines can highlight your shoulders, frame your décolletage, create softness or structure and completely transform the overall feel of a gown.

When should you start wedding dress shopping? 👰🏼‍♀️🤍

One of the questions we get asked ALL the time — and the answer is probably earlier than you think!

As a guide, we recommend starting your dress search around 9–12 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed, allows for your dress to be ordered and made, and leaves time for those all-important alterations before the big day.

✨ But please don’t panic if your wedding is sooner!

If you’ve left it a little later, come and talk to us. Depending on the designer and dress, there may be quicker ordering options available, and we also have beautiful gowns that can sometimes be purchased from our collection.

And if your wedding feels ages away? You absolutely don’t have to wait until the “perfect” month to visit us either. Sometimes finding your dress early is one lovely thing ticked off the list. 🥰

Our biggest advice?

Give yourself time, keep an open mind and enjoy it.

Wedding dress shopping shouldn’t feel like another stressful wedding task. At Rivers, we’ll help you understand timings, guide you through the process and make sure you know all your options. 🤍

Things that would probably get us in trouble at a big brand… 🤭🤍

Opening the boutique on our day off because a bride really needs us.

Messaging our designers to see if they’ll send us that one sample because we have a feeling it could be her dress.

Displaying your thank-you cards around the boutique like they’re our birthday cards. 🥹

Getting ridiculously invested in your wedding plans… and remembering all the little details when you come back.

Crying with your mum, sister, nan or best friend when you have your YES moment. 😭

Knowing exactly which dress you’re talking about when you message us with “I can’t stop thinking about her…”

Getting genuinely excited when your dress arrives and immediately wanting to tell you.

Feeling weirdly emotional when you collect your dress because somewhere between that very first “I have absolutely no idea what I want” and walking out with your wedding dress… you stopped feeling like a customer. 🤍

And yes, feeling a little sad when you leave us for the final time.

Would all of this be a little unprofessional in a big bridal chain?

Probably. 😂

But Rivers was never created to feel like a big bridal chain.

We’re a little independent boutique, and we get to do things differently.

We get to know you.
We remember your story.
We celebrate with your family.
We cry at your yes.
And we care about finding your dress almost as much as you do.

Maybe we’re a little too invested…

But we wouldn’t have Rivers any other way. 🤍
