🐶 FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS & RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP 🐶
I’ve just signed this petition calling for the introduction of a dog owner licence and I really believe this one deserves some traction.
For me, licensing shouldn’t simply mean paying for a piece of paper. I believe owning a dog should come with a basic level of knowledge and responsibility — a bit like learning to drive before you’re given a licence.
That could mean:
🐶 A basic theory/knowledge test before owning a dog
🧠 Understanding canine behaviour, body language & stress signals
🐕 Knowing about responsible handling & socialisation
🚨 Understanding what to do if a dog becomes aggressive or dangerous
🌳 Responsibilities around livestock, wildlife, public spaces & other people’s dogs
💩 Understanding our legal responsibilities as dog owners
🏥 Basic knowledge of welfare & when veterinary care is needed
📍 Dog & owner registered together through the microchip system
🔄 A licence linked to the individual owner, rather than simply paying per dog
⚠️ Consequences where there is repeated irresponsible ownership
I’m sure there are lots of different opinions about how a system like this should work and that’s exactly why I think it deserves a proper conversation.
We already ask people to demonstrate knowledge and responsibility before they’re allowed to drive a car. Why shouldn’t there be some basic education and accountability before taking responsibility for another living animal?
This isn’t about punishing responsible dog owners. It’s about education, accountability and ultimately better welfare for dogs. 🐶❤️
If you agree that responsible dog ownership should be taken more seriously, please sign the petition and share it. The more people who see it, the more chance it has of being heard.
For the love of dogs. 🐾❤️

I want the Government to review Dangerous Dogs Act to bring in stricter penalties for out of control dogs, and require by law that all dog owners hold a dog owner license and that all dogs are tagged.
