One of my favourite quotes comes from Maya Angelou. She says:

When should you actually have your wedding magician perform?

Someone posted in a Sussex wedding group this morning, genuinely confused. They'd booked a wedding magician but had no idea when to have them perform. Cocktail hour? During the meal? That lull while the room gets turned around?

The replies were a perfect illustration of why. A planner said cocktail hour, definitely not after food. A photographer agreed. One magician swore by the lull. Another said never during the breakfast. Everyone certain, everyone contradicting the last person.

So here's my answer, after ten years of doing this:
Most of my bookings are for the drinks reception, and for good reason. People come out of the ceremony on a high but don't quite know what to do with themselves, and that's when the day can go flat and awkward. A good magician breaks that ice and pulls guests together, gives them something to talk about. It's playful, a bit whimsical, and it quietly gives everyone permission to loosen up. That matters more than you'd think.

But a good magician earns their keep in every part of the day, not just the drinks.

Take the wedding breakfast. However carefully you plan the tables, you'll always have people from both sides who've never met, and there's nowhere to hide. A good magician works between courses, never during the food, and transforms each table into a mini show. The ice breaks, the conversation flows long after I've moved on. Plenty of magicians say skip the breakfast. My honest suspicion is they just don't know how to do it well, because it isn't easy.

Then there's the lull. The day's getting on, everyone's in a food coma, the room needs turning around, and nobody quite knows what to do while they wait for the party. It's also when evening guests arrive, another batch of strangers. Magic gives them a warm welcome and lifts the energy back up.

Finally, the evening reception, which gets overlooked. This is when we're least needed but most appreciated. Everyone's had a few drinks, they're in party mode, and honestly it's one of the most fun times to perform for both me and your guests.

This is why magician prices vary so wildly. At one end, someone who'll do a few tricks your guests enjoy, and there's nothing wrong with that. At the other, someone who reads a room, understands group psychology, adjusts on the fly, and isn't just a magician but a wedding professional who quietly takes stress off your plate.

So if you can only have them for one slot, go drinks reception or lull. If you can stretch to it, an all day package is the one. This all assumes typical timings, roughly a 1pm ceremony through to an evening do at seven. Shift those and the best slot shifts with them, so treat it as a guide rather than gospel.

From the moment your first guest arrives until I introduce your first dance, I'm with you the whole day. Announcements, magic, your evening guests looked after too. You enjoy your wedding. I take care of the rest from beginning to end.

Half-Day Hosting — £995
Toastmaster and magician rolled into one. I greet your guests, make the key announcements, introduce the speeches. Close-up magic through the drinks reception and wedding breakfast, plus a short magic show for the whole room to warm up your guests before the speeches. You focus on enjoying your day and I’ll keep it flowing for you.

Simply Magic — £750
Close-up magic through your drinks reception and wedding breakfast. I’ll entertain everyone while you're off doing photos and soaking up your wedding day. It’ll fill the gaps your guests didn't know were there and will create the moments they'll still be talking about long after the day is done.

By the Hour — £400 first hour, £200 every hour after

10 years ago to the very day I had a 'eureka' moment.

There I was, approaching my mid thirties without any idea of what I wanted to be when I grew up. I've always had a variety of interests. Technology to psychology. Martial arts to mysticism. Hacking to circus (not everything has to be alliterated).

I've always slightly envied people that always knew what they wanted to be. I have a friend that always wanted to practice and teach martial arts since his teenage years and that's what he did. He's now regarded as one of the best in the world.

I knew someone else that always wanted to be an accountant and that's all she pursued with laser-like focus. She's doing just fine for herself.

I, on the other hand, had worked in hospitality, as a furniture maker, been to college twice, before falling into retail for 20 years. None of those things felt like me.

Then the moment. I should become a professional magician. In case you're wondering, yes, it's a real job. Of course that's what I should do. I've loved magic for as long as I can remember. I was just 8 years old when I learnt my first trick. Magic has been the one constant throughout my life.

A month later I had my first paid gig. I turned up terrified and performed for two hours at a uni leavers ball. They loved it. I loved it. At the end I got handed an envelope with £200 cash. I couldn't believe it. That was more than two days of work for me at the time.

Since then I've travelled the length and breadth of the country performing and teaching magic, going to incredible events, stunning venues, and meeting people I never would have otherwise. The best bit is, I only just feel like I'm getting some momentum and can't wait to see what the next ten years hold.

Whatever it is, Eureka.
