Okey-dokey, stand-by for two different versions of the same song on Beverley FM in '𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲'.

Today's song was originally written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton as a farewell to her business partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her gratitude and also her decision to pursue a solo career. While the song was a huge hit in the USA in both 1974 and 1982, it was never a UK hit

Fast-forward 18 years and US singer, actress, film producer, and record producer Whitney Houston recorded a pop-ballad version of the song for the 1992 movie The Bodyguard, in which she also starred. The song topped the charts in the UK for ten weeks and in her native America for 14 weeks, becoming the best-selling single of all time by a female artist!

Stand-by to put your musical knowledge to the test this Sunday lunchtime to see whether or not you're a musical smarty-pants with today's '𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀' on Beverley FM. Let's see how you do with these....

• Today's mystery song was the seventh and highest-charting UK hit for a British Rock duo formed in Bath in 1981. It reached number two in early 1985, although it topped the charts in Canada, New Zealand and the USA
• The song is about the quest for power and how it can have unfortunate consequences and was a late edition to the band’s second album, featuring as the final track. The music was initially created from two chords played by the composer with the rhythm taking inspiration from the song “Waterfront” by Simple Minds
• In 1986 the song won Best Single at the Brit awards and was re-recorded and re-released with a different title as a charity single for first Sport Aid campaign, reaching number five in the charts

What's the song?

Leave your guess here and I'll reveal the answer and play you the song at around 1:15 on Beverley FM

Okey-dokey, stand-by for two different versions of the same song on Beverley FM in '𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲'.

Today's song was written by Eddie Grant and recorded by his North London band The Equals. It was originally released as a B-side in 1967, however after impressive sales in Europe the song was re-released the following year as a single in it's own right, hitting the top of the charts for three weeks in July of 1968

Fast-forward 26 years and British reggae singer Pato Banton teamed up with UB40 brothers Robin and Ali Campbell to record a more conventional commercial reggae style version of the song. This version also topped the charts for one week longer than the original in October and November of 1994

• Today's mystery song was the second UK hit for an American alternative rock band, formed in Georgia in 1980 where the band members met at university. It reached number 19 in 1991, although it reached number four in their native USA, making it their highest-charting hit
• The song is about obsession and unrequited love. The singer is baring his soul searching for hidden meaning and hopeful signs, but it’s driving him mad in the process
• The music for the song was written in five minutes, with the lyrics completed within an hour. Unusually, the song features a mandolin as a main instrument
