"📝THROWBACK THURSDAYS TO THE MID 1800's
THE CHAPEL OF THE RESURRECTION as it's better remembered, once stood proud in the foothills of Cavehill & Belfast Castle at no.21 Innisfayle Park.
It was constructed between 1865-69 by the third Marquis of Donegall; George Chichester, as a memorial to his son Frederick Richard, the Earl of Belfast.
Frederick died while travelling through Europe in 1853 at the age of 25, and the chapel was finished 16 years later in 1869.
It's said to have had beautifully stencilled ceilings and upper wall embellishments of fleurs-de-lis and Gothic star-shaped decorations.
In the aftermath of the 2nd World War, the chapel and the lands surrounding it unfortunately became detached from the Belfast Castle Demesne. These lands were redeveloped as housing estates in the 1950s and 60s, leaving the chapel nestled in the middle of these new estates.
The last service in the chapel was held in 1972, after which the building was closed.
Today, after extensive refurbishment, ""the chapel"" has been converted into four luxury private apartments.
