The Dating Clinic 🩺 — let’s talk about the apps

Real talk: the apps burn you out. The endless swiping, the chats that fizzle, the effort that goes nowhere — it’s exhausting, and a lot of you have deleted them in frustration. Fair enough.

But here’s the diagnosis: the mistake isn’t using the apps, it’s using them aimlessly — swiping out of boredom with no real intent. If you’re going to use them, date with purpose: know what you’re looking for, put the effort into the ones that matter, and don’t treat it like a slot machine.

And crucially — the apps should be ONE tool, not the only one. The people who actually meet someone use everything: the apps and real life. Get out. Say yes to things. Meet people through friends. Go to singles and social events where everyone’s there for the same reason you are. Widen the net.

Don’t rely on one tool to do the whole job. Date with intent, everywhere. 💛

Six years ago, we both nervously walked into a speed dating event.

We were each other’s very first date of the night — Table 6.

We chatted again during the break, matched the next day and went on our first proper date a few days later.

Fast forward to today… we’re living together and running Ratemydateni, creating the kind of singles events we wish existed when we were dating.

The Dating Clinic 🩺 — should you go on a second date?

First dates are nerve-wracking, so before you write someone off, ask the right questions. Not “did I feel fireworks?” — fireworks are unreliable and often just nerves. Ask instead: did I feel comfortable? Was the conversation easy? Did they ask about me, or just talk about themselves? Did I feel better or drained afterwards?

A good second-date rule: unless there was a genuine red flag or zero warmth, go again. Attraction often grows on date two or three, once the first-date nerves are gone — some of the best relationships started with a very average first date.

Give the slow burn a chance. You’re deciding on a person, not a performance. 💛

Between Us 🎙️

Honest observation from the consultations: women tend to date across or slightly up — they want someone on their level. Men? A lot of the time it’s driven by looks first, full stop.

But here’s the bit that actually matters for the lads. When men write their dating bio, it’s often one or two lines — we nearly have to drag it out of them — because they assume everyone just looks at the picture. And here’s the thing: women don’t. Women read the picture and what you wrote about yourself.

So that blank bio? It’s costing you. Learn to sell yourself, put a bit of effort into who you are on the page — because she’s reading it, even if you’re not writing it.
