So weβve arrived in instanbul & the first thing I google is whatβs the national flower , of course.
I love Tulips π·
The iconic flower of Istanbul (and the national flower of Turkey) is the tulip, known in Turkish as lale.
While many associate tulips with the Netherlands, they were actually cultivated and popularized during the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul. They hold immense cultural and historical significance:
β’ The Name: The English word "tulip" comes from the Ottoman Turkish word tΓΌlbend, meaning turban, because the shape of the flower resembles traditional Ottoman headwear.
β’ The Tulip Era: The flower was so deeply prized by sultans and noble families that it gave its name to the Tulip Era (Lale Devri), a period of peace, art, and high culture in the 18th century.
β’ Religious Connection: In traditional Arabic script, the letters used to write lale (ΩΨ§ΩΩ) are exactly the same as those used to spell Allah, making the tulip a sacred motif widely used in the tiles of historic mosques like the RΓΌstem PaΕa Mosque.
β’ Istanbul Tulip Festival: Every April, the city celebrates its floral heritage by planting millions of tulips across major public grounds, turning spaces like Emirgan Park and GΓΌlhane Park into vast, colorful gardens.
