A massive thank you from us
We’ve finally had a little time to sit down and take in everything that happened at The Great Yorkshire Geek Meet, and there are a lot of people we really need to thank.
First of all, thank you to everyone who came along.
Seeing the room full of people playing games, chatting, laughing, trying something new, looking around the stalls and just enjoying themselves was exactly what we had hoped for when we first started putting this event together.
We really hope you all had a fantastic day.
There were also quite a few people who went well beyond simply turning up and helping for an hour or two, and we honestly couldn’t have done it without them.
A huge thank you to Luna Bell, who travelled a couple of hours to come and help us and then barely stopped all day. She helped on the door, with payments, customers, the Bring & Buy, the raffle and the morning setup. She just got stuck into whatever needed doing, and we really appreciated it.
Charlotte Ramsden was another person who seemed to be everywhere whenever something needed doing. From helping us set up in the morning to running activities, helping customers and traders and keeping things moving throughout the day — thank you so much.
A big thank you to Andrew Smeaton, who did a brilliant job helping with the games library and was constantly on hand to help customers, traders and us whenever something was needed.
And thank you to Claudia Gale, who helped us with the setup in the morning, supported us throughout the day, helped customers and was simply there whenever we needed another pair of hands.
Our Dungeons & Dragons sessions went down incredibly well, so a massive thank you to Andy Bardsley for all the work he put into organising and running them. We had people asking if there could be more sessions, which is probably the best compliment we could give him.
Daz Linacre and Ava from Pen*stone Tabletop Gaming also deserve a huge thank you for running the Yorkshire Pudding model-painting activity. It was lovely seeing people sitting down and painting their own little puddings, and they were both so patient and helpful with everyone who had a go.
Then there’s Rachel Gibbons, Scott Looker and everyone from Tuesday Night Games Pen*stone.
They brought the board-game library into the main room and helped create a huge part of the atmosphere of the event. People could pick a game, sit down and play, meet other people and try something they might never have played before.
They also helped make the Blood on the Clocktower sessions happen and went out of their way to help us throughout the event.
That whole side of the day simply wouldn’t have been the same without them.
We also had a fantastic group of traders with us:
Poke-IME — Mitchell Amos
Fidgetify 3D Printing — Robert Bailey
Magic Minerals UK — Hannah Lee
Hooked on Ewe — Tracey Lee
Pen*stone Tabletop Gaming — Daz and Ava
Thank you for trusting us with your Sunday, bringing your stalls along and helping make the room feel like a proper event.
People genuinely enjoyed browsing, chatting to you and seeing what you had brought with you, and you added a huge amount to the atmosphere of the day.
We have to give Mitchell Amos an extra mention as well. He travelled a very long way to trade with us and still got stuck into moving tables, chairs and helping us set the venue up. That sort of thing means a lot when you’re trying to get everything ready before the doors open.
A big thank you as well to everyone at Shaw Lane Sports Club. The staff were friendly, helpful and pleasant throughout the day and made things much easier for us whenever we needed anything.
There are also people who helped us long before Sunday arrived.
Becky Luke gave us help, advice and ideas right back at the beginning when this was still just something we were trying to work out. She helped with ideas around the event name, the mascot and some of the early thoughts about what the day could actually look like.
Paul Brennan took a massive job off our hands by building and setting up our website, sorting the hosting side of things, helping us with promotion and giving us advice about selling tickets online. Having somebody who knew what they were doing with that side of things made a huge difference to us.
And then there are all the friends, family, people from our games group and everyone else who supported us along the way.
Some people gave ideas. Some helped us set things up. Some gave advice. Some simply listened to us talk about the event for months on end.
Not every bit of help was visible on the day, but we noticed it and we appreciated it.
We were also really pleased to raise around £130 in support of the End of Life Care Appeal at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, so thank you to everybody who put something into the collection.
And finally, the biggest thank you has to go back to everyone who came through the doors.
You took a chance on our event, supported what we were trying to do and helped create the friendly atmosphere we wanted from the very beginning.
We wanted people to feel welcome whether they came with a group of friends, with their family, or walked through the doors not knowing anybody.
From what we saw on Sunday, we really hope we managed to achieve that.
If you took any photos during the day, we would genuinely love to see them. Please share them with the Reyt Good Events page or tag us in your posts. It would be lovely to see the day from your side of things as well.
Thank you to absolutely everyone who was part of it.
