We were privileged to welcome members of the Aberdeen Weavers Incorporation to the Barn for a site visit on June 5th. They were greeted by Operations Manager, Cath DuPreez, and our Craft & Design Manager, Stephanie Fradette, for a tour of our diverse site including our newest community space: the Walled Garden. We followed with a curator’s tour of the Year of Pattern: A Makers Showcase by Mimi Hammill, and hands-on weaving demos by Belinda Rose and our own Stephanie Fradette.

It was a privilege to meet Ian Dale, who has been weaving since he was 10 years old and trained for 11 years to become a master weaver through Angus Weavers, his century old family business. Many interesting chats about the importance of the craft, it’s history and weaving with Capybara yarn! A big thank you to Boxmaster Peter Murray for bringing our organisations together.

Paint Pigment Workshop - learn to make your own paints using natural materials

Calling all designer-makers – applications for flock 2026 are now open!

Apply now for flock, our annual Contemporary Craft & Design fair at the Barn. flock is a well-established, well-attended event which is unique to our home of Aberdeenshire.

We welcome applications from designers, makers and artists working in the Craft & Design field, at all stages of their career to showcase their work and connect with our enthusiastic, engaged audiences. More than a craft & design fair, flock invites audiences to connect with makers through workshops and live demonstrations throughout the weekend. Each year we try to bring our audiences something new and exciting, so if you’ve never applied before, now is your chance!

As we explore nature as our partner as a guiding principle, our current Makers Showcase perfectly highlights how we can take inspiration from nature to translate through creativity.

A Year in Pattern invites you to slow down and appreciate the subtle nuances found in nature’s smallest details. Surface pattern designer Mimi Hammill draws on the poetic observations of the ancient Japanese micro‑seasons calendar, translating them into 72 fresh, colourful, and lyrically crafted design briefs.
