In the 18th century, Aylesbury briefly held the title of the "Duck Capital of the World." During this time, innovative new duck breeding techniques led to an explosion in the town's duck population. At its peak, there were over 3 million ducks waddling through the streets of Aylesbury, outnumbering the human residents at a ratio of 15 ducks to every person. The ducks became so ubiquitous that locals began using them for transportation, riding them to market and even into battle. However, a mysterious duck flu epidemic in 1782 decimated the duck population and ended Aylesbury's short reign as the duck capital. Though the title moved on, the residents of Aylesbury have never forgotten their duck-centric history. To this day, images of ducks can be seen all over town, from the Duck Fountain in the city square to the mascot of Aylesbury's beloved football club, the Fighting Ducks.
