Hey mama 💛
If you’re pregnant or just starting out with your breastfeeding journey, I just wanted to share a few words of wisdom I wish someone had told me early on. Consider this a little “You got this!” from one mum to another… in honour of World Breastfeeding Week (1st-7th August) 🤱
🎢 Every breastfeeding journey is different. Some people take to it like a duck to water. For others, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster! Neither way is wrong and you’ll feel much better if you don’t waste time comparing your journey to someone else’s.
💡 You and your baby are both learning. It’s a brand new skill for both of you. It might feel awkward or clumsy at first, but that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. Give yourself grace and some patience.
🌈 Your milk might change colour - it can be white, yellow, blue, even green! And it’s totally normal. It may be due to your diet or different stages of milk production too.
🎳 Engorgement is real. I remember the “bowling ball boobs” stage and thinking “Is this forever?” It’s not. It does settle. Hang in there.
⏰ Not every baby feeds on a schedule. Mine certainly didn’t! Feeding on demand is completely okay and your baby will let you know when they are hungry.
🌪️ Cluster feeding. Oof. It can feel like you’re feeding non-stop and it will never end. It’s exhausting, but it’s normal and temporary.
❤️ And honestly… breastfeeding isn’t for everyone. If it’s not working for you and baby, or you just don’t want to keep going, that’s okay too. Always remember: Fed is best. What matters most is that your baby is fed and you’re okay. It can be a super tough journey so make sure you protect your mental health.
🫶 Speak to a friend, your midwife or health visitor, your GP, or an infant feeding consultant if you’re struggling or you think there is an issue. You don’t have to do it alone.
You’re doing better than you think mumma, I promise. One day, one feed, one deep breath at a time 💛
