NEXT SUNDAY (4 May), I’ll be at the Abbey House Wedding Open Day, wearing my red tail jacket and chatting to visitors about how I work to ensure the ‘happy couple' stay chilled and enjoy a memorable wedding day. Come along from 11am and let me explain how I do it and, as a result, make a wedding day even more special. The stunning, new Wedding Garden will be there for all to see – a great addition to the Abbey House wedding offer! I’ll also be working alongside some incredible, fellow professional wedding suppliers, including Steve Hillman Wedding Photography - 2025 marks 10 years since I first worked with Steve Hillman. See you all next Sunday – I’ll be looking out for you.

At the start of March, I said I would put aside £1 a day to mark Brain Tumour Awareness Month and so I'm now delighted to have added £31 to my fundraising appeal, in support of The Brain Tumour Charity. It’s not a lot, but it all adds up – and it’s helped to get me just under £400 short of my current target of £12K. MANY THANKS to: Carolanne Millis-Jesson & Mark, Claire Walker & Scott Walker, Alison Glover & Andy Glover, Elise Eacott & Paul Eacott, Katie Wells & Marc Wells, Emma Curtis & Wayne Curtis, Georgia Robinson & Tom Robinson, Sam Blizzard & Richard Blizzard, Jane Morrison & Mo Morrison and Lisa Winter & Craig Winter. Ever since I launched my Event Host and Toastmaster business I’ve always believed ‘it’s what my clients say that matters to me’ and have been very grateful to people for the reviews and quotes they’ve given me about my work. Last weekend, at the Abbey House wedding Open Day and to coincide with Brain Tumour Awareness Month, I shared quotes (chosen at random) from just a few of my many clients who, along with their guests have, over the last three years kindly donated to my ongoing fundraising appeal. Many thanks, once again to them for their words of support and their financial support for my appeal, in support of The Brain Tumour Charity: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bobwilliams25

A BUSY DAY was had yesterday at the Abbey House Wedding Open Day. Met some fabulous visitors and, hopefully, some will become clients. Since starting my business, l’ve believed ‘it’s what my clients say that matters to me’ and l promoted that approach on my stand by featuring client quotes. The quotes did their job, with some visitors to my stand commenting on them and, in conversation with some visitors, I used them to help explain the job l do. The remodelled Cavendish Suite looked fantastic.

Looking forward to meeting and chatting to visitors, working alongside some great fellow professional wedding suppliers and with the excellent wedding/events team at the Abbey House Wedding Open Day on Sunday (9 March, 11am – 3pm). Can’t wait to have the chance to talk about what I can do for a happy couple on their big day, explain how 'Every picture tells a story' and clearly show how ‘it’s what my clients say that matters to me’. To coincide with Brain Tumour Awareness Month, I’ll be sharing quotes from just a few of my many clients who, along with their guests have, over the last three years kindly donated to my ongoing fundraising appeal in support of The Brain Tumour Charity: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bobwilliams25

1 FOR CHANGE: Today (1 March 2025) sees the start of Brain Tumour Awareness Month so, as part of my continuing fundraising and awareness campaign, in support of The Brain Tumour Charity I’m putting £1 aside every day throughout March; meaning I can add a further £31 to my appeal at the end of the month – not a lot, but it all adds up. I’m calling it ‘1 for change’ simply because, as well as a £1 a day contributing to my 25in25 appeal, I’m one of the thousands of people doing their best to change people’s understanding and awareness of brain tumours.
I’m so grateful to all those who have supported my fundraising since January 2022. However, if anyone feels able to join me in putting £1 a day aside for the 31 days of March, in aid of my appeal, it would be very much appreciated. Having been asked by his wife Kath and daughter Lisa Darby, I was honoured to write and last Friday (25 January 2025) lead, the Celebration of Life Service for John Herdman at Carleton Crematorium and Cemetery, Blackpool. John was the ‘founding father’ of the Northern Guild of Toastmasters forty years ago. Back in 2006, through a friend, I met and chatted with a member of the Guild who encouraged me to apply for membership. I decided to think about it but, just a few days later, I was walking down the aisle in my local Sainsbury’s, when my mobile rang and a loud voice said, “Where’s your application - why haven’t we received it – get it filled in and sent in NOW!” That was my opening contact with John, who would go on to have a great influence on my involvement with the Guild and my work as a toastmaster over the years and I will be forever grateful to him.
Thank you, rest in peace, John.

LAST FRIDAY, had a great day, with the support of Louise Williams; my very own little helper, exhibiting at the Abbey House Wedding Open Day. We met some fabulous couples - thank you for coming over to my stand and chatting - and worked alongside some excellent fellow wedding suppliers*. Now busy responding to a great number of very positive enquiries. Delighted that my new promotional cards went down so well - thank you Jamie Bell and BT Photographic. Thanks to Laura Jayne Ellis, Lauren Gee, Rob Grimshaw, for the work they put in to pull the event together. Thanks also to Jennifer Curtis for popping in for her THANK YOU hug, after the fabulous donation she made to my The Brain Tumour Charity appeal and for then encouraging her friends to do the same. As we left, remembered to get a ‘memory’ shot of the Cavendish Suite bar area before it gets redeveloped - to help make Abbey House an even better wedding venue of choice.

While a certain white haired man in a red jacket only works for one day a year, this white haired man in a red jacket, is available for the other 364 days of the year (diary permitting). If you'd like to find out more, why not come along to the Abbey House Wedding Open Day tomorrow (Friday, 3 January) from 2pm to 6pm and have a chat about how I can help make your day even more special. Hopefully, see you tomorrow.

MASSIVE THANK YOU FOR A VERY PERSONAL FUNDRAISING GESTURE. At the end of August last year, I supported Emma Curtis & Wayne Curtis during their fabulous wedding day at Abbey House. During the celebrations, they and their guests kindly donated £224 to my fundraising appeal in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity. At one point, I met and chatted with Jennifer Curtis, (Wayne’s sister) about my fundraising and she shared with me her own challenging situation, regarding brain tumours. She told me I only had to ask if I felt she could do anything to support my campaign. Well, she didn’t wait to be asked, making a £43 birthday donation to my appeal, earlier this week. In a Facebook post, she then went even further, encouraging her friends and followers to donate ‘the cost of a birthday drink’ to my appeal. By the morning of 1 January, thanks to her donation and those of her friends, a further £308 had been added to my fundraising appeal which, as a result, now stands at £11,475 - a massive thank you to Jennifer and her friends. Her support and that of her friends has given me a New Year’s Day boost to continue my appeal through 2025. In my thank you post to Jen, I mentioned that, if she is around on Friday, I will be exhibiting at the Abbey House Wedding Open Day (2pm – 6pm), along with Louise Williams and we would love to give her a big THANK YOU hug.

IT’S TIME TO MOVE FORWARD AND LOOK TO THE FUTURE. Here’s wishing the couples and clients I’ve supported and the venue teams and fellow wedding & event suppliers I’ve worked alongside, not to mention everyone I will support or work alongside in the future but haven’t yet met, a very Happy New Year and a healthy and successful 2025.

THE FINAL TEN DAYS of my Instagram ‘advent calendar’ have seen me talking about getting the chance for a break, always making time for a selfie with the happy couple, why it’s important to mingle and chat with guests and get some quiet time with the happy couple, knowing when to say ‘no’, my own rules about food and drink when in the red jacket, thanking those who have supported my The Brain Tumour Charity fundraising appeal, aiming to prove ‘every picture tells a story’ – and, of course, paying my own tributes to ‘founding father’, John and maid of honour, Nikki. My thanks to the couples who have ‘liked’ the campaign and, of course, to Steve Hillman Wedding Photography for producing the gallery, from which most of the images were taken – much appreciated. If you viewed this campaign, not knowing what a professional Toastmaster does on a wedding day and would be interested in chatting further, please message me via Facebook or Instagram, or email me at [email protected] Incidentally, if you’re in the area on Friday 3 January, 2025, I’ll be exhibiting at the Abbey House Wedding Open Day (2pm-6pm). In the meantime, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

John Herdman, the ‘founding father’ of the Northern Guild of Toastmasters, sadly died earlier today. In April 1984. a group of friends came together at the Imperial Hotel, Blackpool, to talk about forming a toastmaster’s group; the driving force being John, then General Manager at the hotel. That meeting set the wheels in motion to create an organisation that is still known today as the Northern Guild of Toastmasters. John encouraged me to join the Guild in 2006, played a key role in my training and continued to be extremely supportive over many years including the last two, during which I have been President of the Guild - and for that encouragement and support l will be forever grateful to John. It was so fitting that, forty years after playing his part in forming the Guild, he was guest of honour last month at the Guild’s 40th anniversary celebration. My condolences to John’s wife Kath, daughter Lisa and other family members. RIP John.

8 Dec - 14 Dec DURING THE SECOND WEEK of my ‘advent calendar’ promotion on Instagram (bobhostandtoast), I’ve talked about the confetti shot, pulling together the guest group photograph and the main pictures wanted by the couple, announcing the happy couple into the wedding breakfast, how I believe I make the speeches even more special and how cake-cutting can bring the formal part of the day to an end; not to mention an appearance by ‘Little Santa’. If you’ve been following my daily ‘advent calendar’ stories (put together with the help of an image gallery by Steve Hillman Wedding Photography), thank you. If you haven’t and would like to find out about how I work as a professional Event Host and Toastmaster, please take a look at my Instagram page – bobhostandtoast. My thanks, once again, to Steve Hillman for producing the gallery.
