🪡🧵 To become a member of the Aberdeen Tailors Incorporation, it's not enough to simply have a passion for fashion - you must prove your craft.
 
When First Master Josie Steed, became the first female member of the Tailors Incorporation, she was required to complete an essay piece demonstrating the skills expected of a professional tailor.
 
Her chosen piece? A beautifully tailored skirt.
 
Every detail mattered - from accurate measurements to traditional hand-stitching techniques - before it was examined by the Trade and approved as being of an exceptionally high standard.
 
The skirt wasn't just a garment. It was a modern interpretation of a centuries-old tradition, proving that craftsmanship, precision and creativity remain at the heart of the Tailors Incorporation today.
 
📍 At Trinity Hall, these traditions continue to celebrate excellence while welcoming the next generation of skilled craftspeople.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Business Tea last night. 🪖👏

We were delighted to welcome members, guests, Aberdeen Burgesses and representatives from the The Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee for an enjoyable evening of networking, conversation and community spirit.

A highlight of the event was an inspiring talk from Lt Col (Ret'd) John Donovan MBE DL, Regional Director for Scotland and Northern Ireland at the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF). John shared insights from his distinguished military career, which included service with The Royal Scots and The Royal Regiment of Scotland, as well as operational tours in Northern Ireland, the First Gulf War, Bosnia and Iraq.

John also spoke passionately about the work of the Army Benevolent Fund, the Army's national charity, which provides lifelong support to serving soldiers, veterans and their families facing hardship, illness, injury, bereavement and other challenges.

We are extremely grateful to John for sharing his experiences and insights, and to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success. 👏

💈✂️Barber Surgeon’s Chair: A Cut Above History

Tucked within the treasures of Trinity Hall stands this remarkable relic of Aberdeen's medical and craft heritage.

Long before modern medicine separated the professions, the town's barbers were also surgeons. With steady hands and sharp blades, they not only trimmed hair and shaved beards but also performed minor surgical procedures - from tooth extraction and boil removal to bloodletting and wound care.

This intricately carved chair, proudly bears the old French-Latin term for Surgery - "CHIRVRGIE". Although the Barber-Surgeon Guild were not one of our seven trades, they were formally recognised as part of the Aberdeen Incorporated Trades (Old Aberdeen) by the late medieval period and certainly active by the 1500's.

The Barber-Surgeons of the London Livery Companies date to at least 1308 and are still active today. Now named the Worshipful Company of Barbers, they have a Barber- Surgeon Hall in London 👉 https://www.barber-surgeonshall.com/

🧐Mystery Monday - The Enigma in the Essay Room🧐

If you have ever visited Trinity Hall, you will appreciate that it is a space steeped in centuries of remarkable Aberdeen history. But tucked among the portraits of past members and notable figures hangs one painting that has puzzled visitors for generations - a group portrait with one face deliberately blacked out...

The people shown in the portrait never lived at the same time, instead it is a carefully crafted collage of prominent individuals across the Trades long history. All individuals are accounted for in the frame to the right-hand side of the portrait with the identity of the obscured figure (number 7) being lost to time.

Was it an act of censure? A dispute within the Trades? A personal scandal? No one can say for certain and it remains as one of Trinity Hall's great mysteries!

History doesn't always leave tidy answers - sometimes it leaves gaps, silences and shadows - an enigma preserved in paint, waiting for the next curious mind to ask why.

Love is in the details at Trinity Hall... if you know where to look.
One of our most treasured pieces is this beautifully crafted heart-shaped wooden padlock, created by Ex Deacon Kevin Bowie, of the Wrights & Coopers Incorporation, as his essay piece.  It showcases the skill, precision and creativity that have long been at the heart of the Incorporation.

But this masterpiece isn't the only heart you'll find here. As you explore Trinity Hall, you'll discover heart motifs hidden in furniture, ironwork and handcrafted details throughout the building - quiet reminders that artistry and care have always been part of its story.

So this Friday, we're sharing a little bit of the love. ❤️

👞 Did You Know?

Some of the remarkable footwear on show in the Aberdeen Shoemakers Incorporation cabinet isn't fashionable footwear at all – it's orthopaedic footwear.

Designed to support and correct foot conditions, these specially made shoes show the incredible skill of shoemakers, whose craft extended far beyond everyday boots and shoes.

Also on display is a bunion stretcher – a specialist tool used by shoemakers to carefully widen the leather around a bunion, making shoes more comfortable and extending their life long before modern stretching devices existed.

And perhaps the most eye-catching object of all is the giant boot. This oversized display piece wasn't made to be worn...but as they say, if the shoe fits...😉

These unique artefacts offer a fascinating glimpse into the history, ingenuity and expertise of the shoemaking trade in Aberdeen.

Long before branded packaging and supermarket labels, Aberdeen's bakers had their own way of leaving a signature.

 
Using wooden bread stamps, known locally as "tickles," each loaf was marked with a unique design or the baker's initials, identifying who had made it and serving as a symbol of quality, pride and craftsmanship.

 
Alongside the bread tickles are nesting bronze weights, once used to measure ingredients with remarkable precision, and early biscuit moulds, which allowed bakers to create beautifully decorated biscuits long before modern baking equipment existed.

 
Together, these everyday objects tell the story of the skill, accuracy and creativity that shaped Aberdeen's baking trade for centuries.
