Sometimes the dress doesn’t need to shout.

I have a real soft spot for these long, elegant column wedding dresses.

There are no enormous skirts or acres of tulle here. Instead, it’s all about the line of the dress – beautifully cut fabric following the body and falling almost uninterrupted to the floor.

And within that apparently simple formula, they can be surprisingly different.

Strapless and sweetheart with a little sparkle at the waist. A beautifully embellished neckline. Softly off-the-shoulder and draped through the waist. Or that fabulous fitted square-neck bodice with its almost corseted feel.

They remind me a little of the great Hollywood evening gowns – uncomplicated at first glance, but everything depends on getting that silhouette absolutely right.

And that's the thing about a simple wedding dress: there really is nowhere for bad cutting to hide.

For the bride who doesn't want to feel swallowed by her wedding dress, a column can be a very lovely place to start.

Although I know some of you will remain firmly Team Enormous Skirt forever…

Never underestimate what a bit of dressing up can do.

This is Front Row, and underneath every one of these looks is exactly the same dress.

She starts as a beautifully simple Mikado ballgown – structured corset bodice, full skirt, fabulous train. And that simplicity makes her incredibly good fun to play with.

Add a high-neck lace bolero and she becomes quite romantic. Change that for a different lace topper and she changes again. Add a belt for a little sparkle, pearls for a bit more drama, or throw on the feather cape and frankly she looks ready to marry a minor European royal.

And this is something I love showing brides in the salon.

You don't necessarily need to find a dress that already has every single thing on your wish list. Sometimes finding the right shape is the cleverer starting point.

Sleeves can be added. Necklines can change. A belt can define the waist. A topper can give you lace for the ceremony and come off for the evening. And a cape can turn a relatively simple gown into something quite spectacular.

Same dress. Lots of possibilities.

Well, this is how you make a vintage wedding dress your own.

Christina bought Beaded Beauty from me online, and when she told me afterwards that she’d added sleeves, I was very keen to see what she had done.

Then these photographs arrived.

WOW.

Those soft, full sleeves are such a clever addition. They work beautifully with the scoop neckline and all that wonderful vintage beading – and honestly look as though they could have been part of the dress from day one.

I’m a great believer that vintage dresses shouldn’t become museum pieces. They’ve already had one life. The joy is in giving them another one – and sometimes that means putting your own stamp on them.

Christina absolutely did that.

And she looks fabulous.

Congratulations to you both – and thank you for letting Beaded Beauty have her big moment all over again. ❤️

From the front, she's all beautifully detailed lace, long sleeves and that fabulous high neckline. Then she turns around…

Well.

That completely open back, framed in lace, is quite something.

Romantic, a little bohemian and a touch dramatic. And proof, if we needed it, that a wedding dress can be beautifully covered up and still be rather sexy.

Yesterday I spent the day in a pool hall.

Not a sentence I expected to write about Tricker Bridal.

There were pints. There were pool cues. There were five gorgeous models.

And absolutely nobody was behaving like a sensible bride.

BRIDES JUST WANNA HAVE FUN 🎱💍

Wedding dresses draped over pool tables. Heels where trainers probably usually live. A little bit of chaos. A LOT of fabulous.

I wanted a shoot that felt less 'stand nicely and gaze wistfully into the middle distance' and more 'girls' night out… but somebody brought the wedding dresses.'

And my goodness, did we get it.

The images are AMAZING. I am going to be extremely annoying about them for quite some time.

There’s something quite magical about putting the original sketch beside the finished dress.

This one was Isabella’s.

From that first drawing came patterns, cutting, fittings, a great deal of pinning and sewing, those wonderful embroidered flowers and, eventually, a completely one-off wedding dress made especially for her.

And then I got to see the photographs of Isabella wearing it - thanks to the wonderful Bosie Photography

That’s always the moment when the dress stops feeling like something I made in my workroom and becomes her wedding dress.
