Sew Easy Alterations is not just a business; it's a heartfelt journey that began with a young girl’s dream of becoming a sewing machinist. Dawn, the founder, has woven her passion for sewing into a successful career that has touched the lives of many brides and customers alike.
Dawn started her sewing journey at the tender age of 15, enrolling in a Youth Training Scheme to become a sewing machinist. This early exposure led her to work in various sewing factories, where she honed her skills making a diverse range of items, from skirts and bras to dog beds. Each experience added layers to her expertise, shaping her into the skilled seamstress she is today.
At 36, Dawn made a significant career change to become a hairdresser and barber, a profession she embraced for six years. However, her love for sewing never faded. While working in hairdressing, she continued to take on alterations, and the demand for her sewing skills reignited her passion.
In 2015, after much contemplation, Dawn took the bold step to become self-employed. The decision was nerve-wracking, but it proved to be the best choice she could make. She began working with Timpson Dry Cleaners, handling general alterations, but her heart was set on a more specialized path—bridal wear.
Dawn's journey into bridal alterations was inspired by her own experience of making her wedding dress 20 years ago. This personal milestone gave her the confidence to create wedding dresses for others. The trust placed in her by brides to craft their special dresses was both an honor and a joy.
Dawn specializes in wedding dresses, stating, “I would rather cut a wedding dress than someone’s hair.” Her passion shines through in every gown she alters or creates, and she has received heartfelt appreciation from countless brides.
As her reputation grew, so did her business. Dawn received recommendations from notable bridal shops like Wed2be and Laura May Bridal, as well as through word-of-mouth referrals. In 2023, her dedication and talent were recognized when she won the Best of Welsh Wedding Awards. This accolade was a testament to her hard work and the love her customers have for her craft.
In 2024, she continued to shine, being nominated for the Welsh National Awards in Swansea and winning multiple awards, including the Wedding Hero Award. These recognitions have boosted her confidence and provided her with valuable publicity.
Dawn is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Business Awards, excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. When asked about the impact of these awards, she expressed, “Yes definitely, it gives me much more publicity, and once you have that award, it makes a massive difference. It is good for you to hold these awards to get people like me out there.”
