The morning before the wedding, she came downstairs before anyone else.

The château was still. Light was just beginning to catch the edges of the salon, the gold frames, the old parquet, the garden beyond the French doors still carrying the cool of the night before.

She made herself a coffee and sat in the window seat. Not doing anything. Just being there.

Later, she'd tell us it was one of her favourite moments of the whole weekend.
