Start to finish at Telakka. Tahmela Six opened Tampere Jazz Happening for Mustik Motel, and Lauri Kallio gave the crown to the whole weekend. A blissful run of Sunday gigs, the room relaxed and easy, everyone letting the music touch them. Adele Sauros on sax and flute, Natalia Castrillon on harp, Ville Rauhala bass, Joonas Leppänen drums, Kallio on guitar and electronics.

Thank you once more, Juha-Matti Kauppi, for the 2025 festival programme and so many years before it. And a warm welcome to Martyna van Nieuwland, stepping into big shoes. Curious and looking forward to the programme she puts together for 2026.

Sunday at Tampere Talo and the festival saved three of its most absorbing sets for last. Trio Raulin-Bekkas-Biayenda drew you in to listen eyes closed, François Raulin on piano and mbira, Majid Bekkas on guembri and voice, Émile Biayenda on drums. Émile Parisien’s Quartet surprised on its own terms. Then Goran Kajfeš Tropiques, so meditative I wanted a mattress and a blanket, the strings of Anna Rubinsztein’s violin, Leo Svensson’s cello and Jo Berger Myhre’s bass a joy to follow under Kajfeš on trumpet and synth. A spotless festival from start to finish.

Day three of Tampere Jazz Happening. Saturday at Paja Congress Hall, two shows I’d been waiting for.

Tomoki Sanders (tenor, electronics) played some of his father’s pieces alongside his own. Obvious, but also very welcome and connecting. Tomoki has such beautiful musicians in his group: Ian Finkelstein keys, Keyanna Hutchinson guitar, Christian Napoleon hybrid drums. Meditative, electro-acoustic, close to the source.

Then The Five Corners Quintet! The twenty-year anniversary tour stopped in Tampere too. Jukka Eskola trumpet, Timo Lassy sax, Mikael Jakobsson piano, Antti Lötjönen bass, Teppo Mäkynen drums. Their first album sent me down the jazz rabbit hole, so hearing them live in my home town again was a very special treat.

Paja Congress Hall did the job last year, serving well as the festival’s temporary venue. Looking forward to Klubi and Pakkahuone again as the festival moves back to Tullikamari!

Friday night at Tampere Jazz Happening 2025. Second set of photos from the festival.

The night opened with the Yrjö Award, one of Finnish jazz’s most prestigious honours, going to vocalist Aili Ikonen. She played a short set right after, with the trio she’s worked with for years. Congratulations once more Aili, well deserved award!

Then the guitars. Rob Luft brought his quartet for their Nordic premiere, music he wrote during a long stay on the Gulf of Aqaba when London was locked down. As enjoyable music as his smile on the photo!

Daniel Erdmann’s Organic Soulfood with sax, hammond organ and drums was another highly enjoyable act of the night.

Prior to the festival I had not heard much of Mary Halvorson’s music. Just a few tracks from her latest album, but the live show turned me into a fan. Mary Halvorson with her Amaryllis Sextet is a must see when in town, trust me. She’s DownBeat magazine’s guitarist of the year and still plays seated, quiet, completely her own thing. The room turns enchanting and mesmerising from her sound.

A lot of guitar for one evening. No complaints here.

Tampere Jazz Happening 2025, part one of four.

Thursday night, Telakka. Tahmela Six opened the whole festival, and the room was packed about as tight as I’ve ever seen it. People shoulder to shoulder all the way back to the door.

Everyone stayed quiet. You could feel the whole room lean in, dialled in, concentrated on the six players like they were waiting to receive a transmission from the cosmos. It started slow and deliberate, nobody moving.

Then Ground VI lifted the whole thing, more vibrant and more urgent, and you could feel the room move with it. A taster at the time, from an album still on its way.

A night to remember, and what an opening. More festival photos coming.

Mush Tone Ensemble at Knuutila Mansion in Siuro, Painetun Sanan Markkinat on 16.8.2025. A grey and cool August day with rain coming and going, but the Hämeenlinna based free jazz trio kept things warm. These guys are known from many different groups and this one is one of my favourites. If you haven’t yet, check out their album Walking On The Grass, released in 2023 on the Estonian label RR Gems.

Tero Kemppainen (bass)
Juha Sarkkola (drums)
Tuure Tammi (trumpet and flugelhorn)

Photos from Laukkafest 3, 2025. Big thanks and respect to Nike for organising this little festival. Packed, sweaty and full of life. Shot around Laukontori Antikva & Pispala clothing.

There was an after party over at Vastavirta-Klubi too. Missed it this time, but next time I’m there.

Artists in frame: Topias Tiheäsalo (guitar), Sami Sippola (sax) & Janne Tuomi (drums), plus a glimpse of the master of words, Are, on the mic.

Same weekend, Saarihelvetti metal festival was running at Viikinsaari, so the streets were a clash of styles. See the last portrait of one finely dressed metalhead for proof. Tampere is home to music.

67 x Naked was such a ride! These fellows plays the good old tested and tried New Orleans based jazz - with a style. Can’t stop smiling, enjoying your time and just loading yourself with the energy they generate. Last summer they played two gigs (at least?) in Tampere and one already in 2026. Could not make it my self but trust my word, when they’re in town - a must hear and see experience!

Jimbino Vegan (UK) - clarinet, guitar, vocals
James Beaumont (USA) - sax, piano, vocals
Alice Riberolles (FR) - trombone, guitar, vocals
Philip Holm (FI) - upright bass

This post doesn’t have a direct link to one of the art form’s masters who passed away today, Sonny Rollins. Nor does it have a direct link to the other master whose 100th birthday happens to be today, Miles Davis. But here’s the positive thing: their legacy, their inspiration doesn’t just live on records — it keeps breathing here, locally, through everyone still pushing this music forward. I believe this is the truest salute to the masters.

We have a small, strong, growing and active community of likeminded curious minds seeking new ways to express ourselves through the art we call jazz.

Here are photos from last year, 26th of July, when there were free jazz jams at Pethaus, Pispala, Tampere. On stage: the Pethaus free jazz jams hosts Henri Ijäs, Petri Pentikäinen and Pyry Pynnönen, along with some of the regulars — Jarno Alho, Janni Forsell, and the bassist and singer I both admire but whose names I don’t know — yet.

And the legacy keeps moving: tonight an interesting show at Telakka and, at the same time, a Miles 100 years special DJ night at Vastavirta Klubi upstairs. Tomorrow Mustik Motel’s label night at G Livelab with Tahmela Six and Lauri Kallio (going to be so good!!!), and on Saturday Free Jazz Jams again at Pethaus. Surely I forgot something! Jazz love materialises in this town.
