Iiro, participant in the concert, wanted to share his deeply touched experience of the evening of Sacred Music and Sufi Stories. Here translated:

“The experience was impressive. I expected the concert to be perhaps a little more rigid, and I was surprised by how well it was engaging. The music was wonderful, and it conveyed beauty and joy. It also managed to touch me on a universal human level, even though I don’t represent any of the religious groups involved. I remembered Sheikh Hassan for his sense of humor, and I also took something valuable with me from him.

The atmosphere was somehow really deep, and I can’t even describe it. It was somehow hopeful.”

Juuso Karim Jokiniemi read from the powerful words of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi’s profound poetic and story based book of guidance the Masnavi verses from the first poem: The song of the reed. And performed the sacred seremony of whirling initiated by Rumi as a means of union with the Divine.

Here the beginning translated by Jawid Mojadeddi
The Masnavi published by Orford World Books

“Now listen to this reed-flute’s deep lament
About the heartache of being apart has meant:
‘Since from the reed-bed they uprooted me
My song’s expressed each human’s agony,

A breast which separation has split in two
Is what I seek, to share this pain with you:
When kept from their true origin, all yearn
For union on the day they can return

Amongst the crowd, alone I mourn my fate
With good and bad I have learnt to integrate
That we were friends each one was satisfied
But none sought out my secret from inside

My deepest secret’s in this song I wail
But eyes and ears can’t pe*****te the veil
Body and soul are joined to form one whole
But no one is allowed to see the soul…”
