DJ Kosmos is not your average DJ. A true Spanish electronic music pioneer, his role in the evolution of Iberian club culture makes him not only a top performer but a true activist.
DJ Kosmos is one of the most requested jocks in the best clubs and festivals around Spain and at the decks his style is eclectic and technical. Coming from a techno, house, breakbeat and electro background, he has forged a unique style suitable both for the club or festival atmospheres.
Kosmos has created a personal style that defies categories and satisfies both serious techno heads and trendy club kids alike and as a producer he’s been part of several projects such Majestic alongside Ginebra, making tech house and releasing on labels like D.Press and Palace. He is also part of the cult outfit Vanguard, a project that laid the foundations of Spanish electronica at the late 90’s and currently he is working on his Shadow Traxx project alongside partner Oddzero.
DJ Kosmos has also run several record labels such as Cosmos Records, Palace Recordings, Tracy Recordings and Tempesta Music. Since September 2016, he presents a weekly radio show 303, specialized in electronic music in Barcelona.

Teknopicnic has done a fine array of open air events this summer for techno, house and dance lovers. The last TP daytime event is in Asentajapuisto, Herttoniemi starting 2PM on Saturday.
Afterparty begins at Merikerho Terrace at 9PM. Their guest for the night Jones Hatrick hails from Tampere, where he runs event series Technights, which brings together Tampere and Helsinki based djs and event organisers to make unique events.
In the Club, invited by SARELL, one of the top rising names in harder techno, Lukas Meunier (Kreatur, DE) is joined by Leo Laker, SARELL himself, Oikam Orim and visuals by Rod Mjölk.

As a kid, we used to play a game saying “the ship is loaded with..” and you would come up with, say animals starting with L. It is with this kind of exploratory enthusiasm that I look at what MERIKERHO may become. As a captain with a great crew running the restaurant and music programme, besides giving the ship some direction my role is to open up new possibilities. I want to be taken by surprise with bold ideas by people who want to organise something with us, combining music and various forms of visual, sonic and urban culture.
Our club space has excellent acoustics and a sound system suited for both club and live sets with matching lighting that enables different modes. Seating 200, it is also great for organising events. Ceiling lights are from Imatran Voima water flow laboratory. Some stools are designed by Harri Koskinen. DJ-Booth is a coproduced with Genelec, designed by Harri Koskinen. The bar is made of container steel and tall tables + interior are a result of several iterations, me thinking about the history of the ship itself and re-use of materials. The timber you find in staircases, wash basins, and some table tops is former floor of the cargo space. Azobe, or Ironwood is hardwood used in particular for maritime constructions. In all of the design work one had to reflect acoustics as well as weight, durability, and how to be both street and sea credible at the same time.
Those who were visiting or living at mbar, customers and artists, friends and family, will recognise several items that have been up cycled to Merikerho. Terrace furniture, some awnings, music container, the UPM deck composite. Even the concrete ramp for wheelchair access was store for two years to have a new life in Sörnäinen. Then again, to build the steel structure to carry the terrace deck was a huge undertaking, and a lot of things are newly installed.
It took 13 months to build Merikerho. Upgrades will appear every year! It is a space that needs care and have room to evolve in the future. In the summertime, the terrace offers both an open area and a covered Sol Lounge in the back of the boat. Music stage is made out of an old shipping container.
The ship Sophia B transported cargo, especially grain, from Åland to the Finnish mainland until 2015. Previously it was sailing in Dutch coast and canals. The ship took 600 tons of cargo, which by transport industry standards was not enough. As it coincided, it became available for sale at the same time I was looking for a ship that could become a spacious venue. It felt important to create a ship which was not made of compartments, but of space where people could indeed say: we are in the same boat.
MERIHAKA and SUVILAHTI make a perfect spot for MERIKERHO. Former industrial harbour, Suvilahti and the grey-white vessel match well with the Black Alps of Sörnäinen (mountains of coal). MERIHAKA is a utopia for living as a block of houses, shops, parking, kindergarten all in one area. It comes from a time when Helsinki needed apartments fast, resembling modernist architecture by the likes of Le Corbusier. In my opinion, Merihaka and Suvilahti are beautiful. However, that alone does not make our location a perfect spot.
THE CULTURAL CENTER of HELSINKI has shifted. It is now in Hakaniemi-Merihaa-Kallio-Sörnäinen-Suvilahti-Vallila. Of course the downtown has the large cultural institutions, but I am talking about living culture of arts and music, street art, and making new things happen. The gas clocks will host ELMU and The Helsinki Youth Office live venue. The Flow festival has permanently transformed how we see the area. Bustling bars and clubs, restaurants, artisan shops in the region make this the living hub. So yes, this is the perfect spot to be in, don’t you think?
Working first with METORI 1998-2000 and then 2001-2015 with mbar at Lasipalatsi, it was not the walls, but the people who made what we were. Having Johanna, Matti, Marcos, Ruben, Elina, Sid and Matthew to work at Merikerho, and many others to support us during and after the opening has been fantastic. The artistic and professional drive of those who organise clubs and play music, do visuals and bring people together I can but continue to bet inspired by.
