Esittelemme joulupallot – suomalainen versio sisilialaisista arancineista. Sisiliassa arancinit tehdään ylijääneestä risotosta ja myydään katuruokana. Me varastimme idean ja sovitimme sen joulupuuroon.

Joulun aikana voit pyöräyttää ylijääneestä joulupuurosta kultaiset Xmas ballsit: puurosta pyöriteltyjä palloja, jotka leivitetään panko-korppujauhoissa, uppopaistetaan ja viimeistellään chilillä, kanelilla ja tomusokerilla. Tarjoillaan puolukkakastikkeen ja vaniljakastikkeen kanssa. Ja kyllä, pallot on injektoitu joulumielellä.

Pääset maistamaan niitä myös -joulutorilla Helsingissä 05.12.2025–06.01.2026, yhdessä perinteisen lämpimän joulupuuromme ja muutaman hieman kokeellisemman, joulupuuroon perustuvan uutuuden kanssa.

Introducing our Christmas balls – a Finnish twist on Sicilian arancini. In Sicily, arancini are made from leftover risotto and sold as street food. We’ve stolen the idea and adapted it for your leftover Christmas porridge.

During the Christmas period you can turn your leftover joulupuuro into golden Xmas balls: porridge rolled, coated in panko and deep fried, then dusted with chilli, cinnamon and icing sugar. Served with lingonberry coulis and vanilla custard. And yes, the balls are injected with Christmas spirit.

You can also try them at in Helsinki from 05.12.2025–06.01.2026, alongside our traditional warm Joulupuuro and a few more experimental, novelty Christmas porridge ideas.

4. reduce the amount of meat you eat (if you eat)... Even one veggie day a week can be a great way to start, i find cooking with vegetables is great for improving your cooking skills, as you need to be more creative and bold with adding flavours and introducing fats and textures, it’s not hard to make a steak taste good right? but what can you do with a carrot? https://www.instagram.com/food.unfolded/ is a great Instagram account, that has simple graphical breakdowns of the nutritional benefits of various food and highlights the impact of various products being grown
5. meal planning, less spoken about but important... so my point here really is about thinking about your food beyond the immediate meal you are preparing, so for example, if you plan to have leftovers; do they freeze well? are you planning on eating this in the evening / next day? do you plan to give some to a friend/neighbour (if you baking in mass or something!) can the meal you are making be transformed in to another meal? so for example; tomato soup the next day can be reduced, and made into a lasagna, perhaps the pesto you had with a pasta tomorrow can become part of a baguette? etc, this does not only reduce the likeliness of food being wasted but also makes cooking more time efficient and also takes less heating capacity / electrical resources if done effectively

6 tips for helping reduce your food waste, eat food less travelled and save some euros 😊 (part 1, (3 points ☃️)

1. buying in season! one way to check the if goods are in season is to walk through the
communal gardens. when products are in peak season you will also notice the price dropping as there is more supply than demand and food is of course perishable. Eating seasonally in Finland year-round is difficult unless you are preserving huge amounts or happy with a diet of winter root veg, onions & reindeer, I also consider the central European seasons, as we are not super far from Holland for example (well in compared to the Americas and such! there is a great calendar and seasonal food ideas by satokausi at www.satokausi.fi
2. eat wild foods! the lowest impact and potentially the most rewarding way of eating! the art of foraging takes patience, but over time, the great outdoors can become your supermarket (or well at least a few shelves on the supermarket), If you are interested I’d recommend following on ig; https://www.instagram.com/samitallberg/?hl=en or then Sami has multiple books with wild food recipes and tips on foraging, he has been a friend and mentor to me over the years
3. learn methods of preserving, don’t be intimidated to try! there is a wealth of information online, the most simple technique are perhaps pickling (using vinegar or acidic solutions), pickling is less prone to molding problems as the solution is acidic when you introduce whatever it is you want to pickle!, drying is also easy, if you try to keep enough air around the product, direct sunlight & air flow help (ofc you can use a dehydrator, great to reduce was especially for greens, herbs & fruit. Freezing is also preserving!
