Ethiopian birthday spirit....
Traditional most Ethiopians don’t celebrate their birthday, but nowadays the cakes are becoming bigger and bigger. The article starts with an interview with Tigist, who doesn’t know exactly when she is born, so she can’t tell you when her birtday is. Tezeta told me she celebrates the birtday of her 3 children with ethiopian new year; she will buy them presents and eat cake.
Nowadays people in cities like Addis start to celebrate birthdays more reguarly. Especially when a child turns 1 the parents will throw a big party. Rewina, owner of Rewi Kids Birthday Decor, for birthday decors, explains that more and more people celebrate big with huge cakes, balloons and sometimes between 100 and 150 guests. “People want a party where the color of the shoes is matching with the color of the cake.”
After the first big party for the kid, the parties become smaller, Rewina tells. Nowadays you see people also bringing cake tot he Kindergarten.
The article closes with an example of a guy who never celebrated his birthday but when he met his wife, who explained him about the American way of celebrating birthdays, he organized a birthday party for himself.
Happy to be part of this article.
