Confessions of a Private Chef – Part 3

Well, the secret is finally out, so I can officially wish Karen a very Happy Birthday! 🎂🥂

A huge thank you to her husband Chris from Uga for trusting me with the catering for her surprise celebration. It's always a privilege to be part of somebody's special day, especially when it's been planned in secret for months.

The buffet disappeared at an alarming rate. In fact, Chris had mentioned he was hoping for leftovers to take home afterwards. Unfortunately for Chris, the guests had other ideas! 🤭

And honestly, that's exactly how it should be.

The guests are everything. ❤️

One of my favourite moments wasn't during the event itself, but hearing afterwards that the food was "lush". Sometimes the simplest feedback means the most.

Away from the kitchen, I enjoyed a catch-up and shopping trip with the lovely Jackie Lee. What started as a quick errand soon became a hunt for tiny glass bottles for her wedding sand ceremonies. ⏳

I also had the pleasure of meeting some delightful clients from Jersey this week to chat through plans for their exciting event in November. We've been talking online and sketching ideas together since last year, so it was lovely to finally meet in person.

Meanwhile, in the world of Matt 🤠 we turned up for his 8pm hospital appointment only to discover it was actually booked for 8am. I'll leave you to imagine my face 🙄

On a more serious note, a huge thank you to the friends who have continued helping with lifts to hospital and doctor appointments when I couldn't get away because I was working. It really does remind you how lucky you are to have good people around you.

Tigger also had a trip to the vet this week. Getting him into the cat basket was considerably more difficult than filling dozens of crème brûlée shot glasses for the buffet🐈

I also managed to squeeze in a viewing of a house that rather caught my eye. Whether it's the one remains to be seen 🏡

As for me, I was all set for a little rest and recovery after my upcoming leg surgery, only to be told it has been postponed. So for now, life continues at full speed.

Between birthday buffets, house viewings, shopping adventures, vet visits and hospital appointments that weren't, life has certainly kept me on my toes this week 🏃‍♀️

Has life kept you on your toes this week?

Until next week...

Wishing our Lanzarote Referee the best of luck for the world cup games

LANZAROTE REFEREE AT THE WORLD CUP

The tiny Canarian Island of Lanzarote will be represented at the World Cup 2026 by local boy Alejandro Hernández who is Spain’s sole referee at the competition.

The 43-year-old was born in Arrecife and made his Primera Liga debut in 2012/13 and since then has gone from strength to strength officiating many El Clásico games between Real Madrid and Barcelona as well as huge profile Champions League matches and is widely regarded as one of the best referees in the world.

The Conejero (local lad) has already been to a World Cup when he was part of Spain´s VAR team back in 2022 and will definitely be the leading official at least at one match but probably more during the competition.

FIFA only announces referee’s appointments match by match but he has been confirmed as the fourth official in Scotland’s opening match versus Haiti early Sunday morning.

One set back he may have is that he cannot be involved in any of Spain’s matches or games that can affect Spain. If Spain were to go out of the competition early then he could go all the way to the final but that is extremely unlikely to happen. He also has the huge advantage of speaking Spanish, English and French fluently.

Alejandro on occasions referees some of Lanzarote´s pre season matches as a warm up to the season ahead.

Undoubtedly, he will be returning to the Island of the Volcanos after the World Cup to relax and prepare for the season ahead.

On behalf of everybody in Lanzarote and lovers of the island we wish you a successful and memorable World Cup Alejandro.

LUSH! 😍

Just had a message from yesterday's buffet client to say it was absolutely lush.

The best part?

He told me he'd been hoping for leftovers to take home...

but the guests ate everything! 🤭

After an early start, countless trays, quiches, brownies, creme Catalan, savoury rolls, wraps and a mountain of washing up back at the unit, comments like this make all the hard work worthwhile.

Thank you for trusting me with your celebration. ❤️

🎉 The secret is out! 🎉

Tonight's surprise birthday celebration for a lovely local lady was a complete success.

With the food laid out, the table looking beautiful and the guests arriving full of anticipation, all that was left was for the birthday girl to walk through the door... and yes, she was genuinely surprised! ❤️

It's been a wonderful evening and a lovely reminder that sometimes the simplest celebrations create the best memories.

Now, after what has been a non-stop run of events, catering, productions, BBQs and private dining experiences since Christmas, I'll be taking a little break from events for the next couple of weeks.

I have a small operation on my leg next week, so it's the perfect opportunity to rest, recover and recharge before the busy summer season begins.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support my little business and trusts me to be part of your special occasions.

For now though, it's time to swap serving tables for putting my feet up! 😊

SUNDAY CONFESSIONS OF A PRIVATE CHEF – EPISODE 2

Some weeks are smooth.

And then there are weeks like this one.

There were hospital appointments with Matt as we continue navigating his eye treatment, a trip to the vets with Tigger, apartment changeovers, client enquiries, shopping lists and event planning.

Then, while ironing apartment bedding, the iron suddenly let out a dramatic sizzle, a puff of smoke and promptly retired itself from service.

One iron down.

As if that wasn't enough, the journey to an event in Playa Blanca became an adventure thanks to road closures on the LZ-30, leaving me wondering if I'd arrive before the guests or just in time for dessert.

Thankfully, the food was served, the guests were happy and nobody went hungry.

Because that's the thing about this job.

Guests see the beautifully presented tables, the delicious food and the relaxed atmosphere.

What they don't always see is everything that happens before the first plate reaches the table.

The hospital visits.

The vet appointments.

The unexpected detours.

The broken equipment.

The endless lists.

And occasionally, a cat who decides they need attention right now.

Talking of unexpected moments, it reminded me of a time when Matt and I lived in Cornwall.

I was walking to work one morning when I passed a lady wearing bright pink wellies.

We smiled, said good morning and carried on our way.

When I got to work, I mentioned to a colleague that I'd just walked past a lady who looked remarkably like Dawn French.

Without missing a beat, they replied:

"That'll be because she is Dawn French. She lives just down the road from you."

Apparently, I'd been chatting to my neighbour and hadn't the faintest idea who she was.

Looking back, it still makes me smile.

Life has a funny way of giving us stories when we least expect them.

And sometimes, those stories begin with exploding irons, road closures and pink wellies.

See you next Sunday for Episode 3.
