Launched in 2007, Rock n Roll Bride is one of the biggest wedding blogs in the world. Updated daily, the site and it’s accompanying print magazine attracts quirky, alternative and creative readers from all over the planet. The brainchild of Kat Williams, the site came about while she was planning her own wedding in 2008. After becoming jaded by the limited offerings of the UK wedding industry, Kat saw a niche for alternative wedding inspiration and ran with it!

They hired their Glasgow wedding venue for £200 - then made almost everything themselves.

Morag and Fran’s £7,800 bowling club wedding became one huge creative project involving their friends and family, a 40-metre tassel garland, celestial styling, 90s anime references and skills Morag literally learned because she wanted to make something for the wedding.

They even replaced the bouquet toss with a toy cat thrown into the entire crowd.
But Morag is equally candid about the part of DIY weddings we don’t talk about enough: how much time and labour they actually require.

Why this couple put a different wedding cake on every table

Rachel had grown up with a baker for a mum and seen far too much wedding cake go uneaten. Her solution? Forget the traditional centrepieces and give every table its own flavour instead.

Guests spent dinner wandering between tables swapping slices.

But that wasn’t the only convention Rachel and Jada reconsidered. As a le***an couple in Utah, they also made the emotional decision to legally marry earlier than planned when the changing US political climate left them uncertain about what their rights might look like by their original wedding date.

Their eventual celebration was filled with vintage finds, dried flowers from their relationship, handmade details and a heart-shaped altar built with Rachel’s dad.

They got married on their favourite restaurant’s final night

The morning after Rae and Aaron’s 40-person wedding, Up Scale Restaurant and Bar closed its doors forever.

So they gave it a proper send-off: a hot pink mini wedding dress, Sleep Token down the aisle, almost 20 speeches, a 1am veil toss for friends of every gender and a party that carried on until 5am.

By the end, the newlyweds were in sweatsuits and the restaurant staff had joined them.

At this wedding, the guests made a commitment to the couple too.

Morgan and Tiffane wanted their marriage to recognise the community surrounding them, so after their chapel ceremony they created a mandala ritual filled with marigolds, crystals, ancestral symbolism and objects representing the important people in their lives.

And that was only one part of a celebration featuring a pink wedding dress, tarot readings, live funk, a Dolly Parton drag queen and a fiercely competitive lip-sync battle.

How do you plan an emo wedding without making it look like a mid-2000s costume party?

Look beyond wedding Pinterest.

Old gig posters, album artwork, band merch, zines, records and the music you actually grew up with are a much better starting point. From gig-ticket invitations and guitar-pick place cards to coloured veils, music venues and a reception playlist built like the headline set at your favourite club night, your emo years contain a LOT of wedding material.

And yes, your scuffed Converse are invited.
