The artificial flavour of this remake did not impress us. Eli Roth's movie could use some pacing and editing to become more funny or scary. Unbelievably, it failed in both, despite some good acting

Charli XCX released her 6th album two years ago and turned the whole planet into acid green pop culture overnight. Now, instead of the album everyone was waiting for, she has done something nobody expected. She switched lanes into acting.

Her new film, Erupcja, by an indie American director, Pete Ohs, was released in Spain on August 28th.

On Reddit, the reaction is mostly positive. Fans keep praising the dreamy visuals, the Warsaw setting, the score, and the chemistry between Charli and her co-star Lena Góra. A lot of people admit they were surprised she can actually act, with some calling this her best performance yet. But there are dissenters too, with one viewer summing up the divide by asking how something can feel both really good and really thin at the same time. Polish viewers added another layer, enjoying Charli speaking Polish on screen while disagreeing on whether the unusual dialogue style works or is the weakest part of the film.

On Letterboxd, the crowd is more cinephile and even more divided. People love Warsaw almost as its own character, the Euro summer atmosphere, the sound design, and Charli's understated performance. The criticism repeats too, that the story feels superficial, the dialogue is underdeveloped, and the short runtime makes it feel more like a stretched out short film than a full feature. One of the funniest recurring comments is that Warsaw might genuinely be the best character in the movie.

If Erupcja starred a completely unknown actress instead of Charli XCX, do you think it would still get this much attention and this many warm reviews? Or is half the conversation really about the pop star, not the performance?

Nearly 28 years after Practical Magic first cast its spell, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are heading back to the Owens house, joined by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as the aunts, plus a new generation of witchy women.

Fun fact: the original flopped in 1998 and only became a cult classic years later, passed down through Halloween rewatches and midnight margaritas (yes, real tequila was involved in filming that scene, says producer Denise Di Novi).

Before Practical Magic 2 hits theatres we are going back to the Owens house to get into the witchy mood and warm up.

Locarno79 just wrapped, and if you think festival juries play it safe, think again. The Golden Leopard went to Florin Șerban's You Don't Belong Here, a bleak Romanian father-son drama about complicity and violence, no easy answers, no comfort.

But the real talking point was the programming itself. While other festivals have been rattled by protests and boycotts this year, Locarno leaned straight into politics: a retrospective on the Hollywood blacklist, films from Iran and Georgia, directors hiding behind pseudonyms. Artistic director Giona Nazzaro's line: "We do not shy away from the politics because to shy away would be to shy away from the world."

Loved The White Lotus? Add this to your list.

The Birthday Trip is a critically acclaimed Australian indie satire that's been building buzz after defying expectations in its home market.

The film was snubbed by festivals and distributors, so the filmmakers self-released it. It has since outperformed comparable films backed by major distributors, earning four-star reviews from The Guardian and The Canberra Times, and praise from The Australian, which called it a must-see Australian story.

The story follows three upwardly mobile millennial couples who gather at a luxury farmstay to celebrate a joint thirtieth birthday. Among them: a weapons manufacturer, an ABC development coordinator, a finance bro, and a painter, representing a cross-section of Australia's elite. What follows is infidelity, inequality, and inebriation, with simmering social tensions captured through immersive camerawork, building to one of the most talked-about stunts in Australian indie cinema history: a twenty-tonne bulldozer driving straight through a house.

If you're the kind of person who watches White Lotus for the social dissection as much as the drama, this one belongs on your watchlist.

🎬 The movies are having a moment in 2026!

The summer box office has just passed $4 billion, only the second time it’s reached that mark since 2020.

Five films have already crossed the $1 billion mark this year, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.

And it’s not just the big blockbusters. Films like Backrooms and Obsession are also getting plenty of attention.

Looks like 2026 is turning into a pretty good year for movie theaters.

What is Barcelona's oldest cinema?

Barcelona has several historic film venues, and figuring out which one is truly "the oldest" depends on how you define the question.

Cinema Malda, located in the Gothic Quarter, has been screening films continuously since 1945. It remains active today and is often cited as the city's oldest operating cinema.

Cines Verdi actually predates it. The venue first opened in 1926 under the name Salon Ateneo, well before it became the arthouse cinema Barcelona audiences know now.

The oldest building of the three is Teatre Coliseum, which has stood since 1923. It no longer functions primarily as a cinema, however, and today operates mainly as a live performance theater.

So the answer changes depending on whether you're asking about the oldest cinema still showing films today, or the oldest building that once housed one.
