Last night we watched Backrooms.

Score: 7/10

Backrooms is a solid horror with impressive acting and cinematography, but it could be a bit less suspenseful and more eventful. Maybe the sequel will impress us more. A special mention to the immersive effect of the flickering lights, created by the cinema before the start of the show.

If you've seen it (or the original Backrooms videos that started it all), we'd love to hear if you think a sequel could fix this, or if the format works better as 10 minutes than 90.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoni Gaudí. To commemorate the occasion, Pope Leo XIV celebrated a special Mass at the Sagrada Família, while Pope Francis took a historic step in April 2025 by declaring Gaudí "Venerable," putting the architect known as "God's Architect" on the path to sainthood.

Just a few days ago, on June 7, Barcelona unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the site where Gaudí was struck by a tram in 1926, a ceremony we were fortunate to attend and capture in a photo.

One of the most remarkable films about Gaudí is Antonio Gaudí (1984) by Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara, best known for the cult classic Woman in the Dunes. Rather than offering a conventional biography, the film immerses viewers in Gaudí's architecture through movement, light, texture, and music. Cinema lovers often praise it as one of the greatest documentaries about architecture ever made, a hypnotic experience where buildings become the protagonists and Barcelona itself feels like a dream.

Last night we watched Mile End Kicks and gave it a 7/10.

A more-or-less predictable rom-com about a young female music critic finding her voice, the film is notable for its setting in Montreal in the summer of 2011. What confused us was the representation of French-speaking Canadians, who seemed almost completely separated from the central English-speaking storyline.

We also hope Apple paid the filmmakers for featuring so many (retro!) gadgets from the company. On the other hand, the film's soundtrack was truly charming.

Watching Pandora's Box (1929) yesterday was a lot of fun! Audiences of the 1920s certainly loved cruel and dramatic movies. We liked this one too, especially the acting of Louise Brooks and Alice Roberts.

It was our last silent movie of the season, but we hope to come back this fall to bring you more classic cinema blended with live music.

We may be witnessing a shift in the film industry where a handful of amateur creators find paths that sidestep traditional Hollywood entry points. Like the rare musicians and artists who turn viral TikTok or YouTube fame into lasting careers, some aspiring filmmakers are leveraging social media to build audiences without expensive film degrees or studio backing, though such stories remain the exception rather than the rule.

A remarkable example is the horror movie Obsession, arriving in Spanish cinemas this summer. Its director, Curry Barker, started as a sketch comedian on YouTube alongside Cooper Tomlinson on their channel "That's a Bad Idea," which reportedly generated hundreds of millions of views across platforms. Barker later made Milk & Serial, a feature-length found-footage horror film posted for free on YouTube that attracted more than two million views despite a budget of just $800.

Yet internet fame alone did not open Hollywood's doors. Obsession premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it generated significant industry attention and sparked a bidding war that culminated in a reported $15 million acquisition by Focus Features. Barker's story raises an interesting question: can online creativity serve as a genuine alternative to traditional industry routes, or does long-term success still depend on validation from the very institutions it appears to circumvent?

We watched The Mandalorian and Grogu and gave it 6/10 ⭐

«The Mandalorian and Grogu» is well-made entertainment, but it has issues both with the TV show's plot continuity and real-life context that we cannot ignore.

Baby Grogu is cute nonetheless, and his scenes made us smile (some even felt the urge to experience parenthood). You don't need to know the lore to root for the characters, but we could have totally waited to experience this story via a streaming service.
