We’re so excited after the launch of the Mada Mentorship Program last Wednesday!

In the first session led by Ahmed Shawky, our participants met with him and Ali Zaraay for the first time — opening conversations about curation, artistic practice, and thoughtful project proposal writing that will guide the program in the weeks to come.

Tomorrow, the group will reconvene with Nadia Mounir.

في أول جلسة مع أحمد شوقي، المشاركين اتقابلوا معاه ومع علي زرعي لأول مرة — وبدأوا نقاشات عن الكيراشن، الممارسة الفنية، وصياغة مقترحات المشاريع بطريقة واضحة ومبتكرة، واللي هتوجّه البرنامج خلال الأسابيع الجاية.

Join us for the opening of Observer Speaks: A Young Artists' Guide to the World on Saturday, August 16th at 7pm! Featuring the work of 12 artists in collaboration with , this exhibition brings together young artists who are responding to the experience of being stuck as observers while the larger world rotates around them. Their work speaks to what it feels like to grow up in a complex world, from the early 2000s to the present—and how personal stories can shine a light on larger truths.

تعالوا احضروا معانا افتتاح معرض "مش مجرد عيال" يوم السبت ١٦ أغسطس الساعة ٧ مساءً!المعرض بيعرض أعمال ١٢ فنان بالتعاون مع الورشة – الجامعة الألمانية بالقاهرة. كتير من الشباب بيحسوا أنهم مجرّد متقرجين في عالم بيتحرك من حواليهم بسرعة. بعيد عن دوائر التأثير المباشرة، الشباب دايماً بيلاقوا طريقتهم الخاصة للتعبير والمشاركة، بطرق إبداعية ومؤثرة. المعرض ده بيجمع أعمال فنانين شباب بيحكوا من خلالها قصصهم وتجاربهم في عالم معقد متغير، من أوائل الألفينات لحد دلوقتي.

قصصهم الشخصية بتكشف عن واقع أكبر بيعيشه جيل كامل من خلال الرسم، التصوير، الفن الرقمي، وغيره، الفنانين دول بيشاركونا القضايا اللي تهمهم، و ايه الي بيحرك مشاعرهم، وبيورونا العالم من وجهة نظرهم. المعرض مش بس عن الفن، ده كمان دعوة إننا نشوف العالم بعين الجيل اللي جاى.

Meet the Mentors, who will guide the journey.

Throughout Mada, four incredible mentors will be leading sessions that dive deep into the realities of being an artist today. Each one brings a unique perspective shaped by their own artistic and curatorial practices, sharing tools, experiences, and questions that matter.

Ahmed Shawky Hassan, the Artistic Director of Mada Program, is an artist, curator, and author whose work explores how official and unofficial narratives shape perceptions in art. He works across various media, including video, text, and installation.

Nadia Mounier is a visual artist and curator whose work explores self-representation through photography and video. She is also the Program Manager at the Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF).

Rania Atef is a visual artist and cultural practitioner. Her work explores labor, care, and authority in both social and artistic settings. She’s also a co-founder of “Kohllective.”

Ali Zaraay is a documentary photographer and the founder of the “Safena 7” collective. His work explores urban transformation, displacement, and memory, using photography, video, sound, and installations.

على مدار برنامج "مدى"، أربعة من المرشدين الرائعين هيقودوا جلسات بتغوص بعمق في واقع كونك فنان النهارده. كل واحد فيهم بيقدم منظور فريد اتشكل من خلال ممارساته الفنية والتنسيقية، وهيشارك أدوات، تجارب، وأسئلة مهمة.

أحمد شوقي حسن: المدير الفني لبرنامج مدى، فنان، وقيم فني، وكاتب، بيستكشف في شغله إزاي السرديات الرسمية وغير الرسمية بتشكّل تصوّراتنا عن الفن، وبيشتغل عبر وسائط متعددة زي الفيديو والنص والتركيب.

نادية منير: فنانة بصرية وقيمة فنية، شغلها بيدور حوالين تمثيل الذات من خلال التصوير والفيديو. نادية هي مديرة البرنامج في مؤسسة التعبير الرقمي العربي (ADEF).

رانيا عاطف: فنانة بصرية وباحثة وممارسة ثقافية، أعمالها بتتأمل في مفاهيم العمل والرعاية والسلطة في السياقات الاجتماعية والفنية، وهي واحدة من مؤسسي "كولّكتيف".

علي زرعي: مصوّر وثائقي ومؤسس مجموعة "سفينة ٧"، شغله بيركّز على التحوّلات العمرانية، التهجير، والذاكرة، وبيستخدم التصوير، الفيديو، الصوت، والتركيبات عشان يوصل أفكاره.

In line with its commitment to contemporary art practices, Darb 1718 launches “Mada,” a mentorship and hands-on experimentation program dedicated to emerging artists, students and recent graduates from art disciplines. The program aims to bridge the gap between academic study and independent professional practice by offering practical tools and thoughtful guidance to support their future goals.

The program spans six sessions held during August and September 2025, under the artistic direction of Ahmed Shawky Hassan, in collaboration with a select group of artists and curators: Rania Atef, Ali Zaraay, and Nadia Mounir.

This program includes:
- Open discussion sessions
- Practical workshops with the mentors
- A field visit to an art institution to explore institutional diversity and the art economy
- A closing roundtable on art as a profession

في إطار التزامها بدعم ممارسات الفن المعاصر، درب ١٧١٨ بتطلق برنامج "مدى"، برنامج إرشادي وتجريبي عملي مخصص للفنانين الناشئين، وطلبة وخريجي كليات الفنون.

البرنامج بيهدف إنه يساعد المشاركين على الانتقال من الدراسة الأكاديمية للممارسة الفنية المستقلة، من خلال أدوات عملية وتوجيهات تساعدهم يحددوا أهدافهم الفنية ويشتغلوا عليها، ممتد على مدار ٦ لقاءات خلال شهري أغسطس وسبتمبر ٢٠٢٥، تحت الإدارة الفنية لـ أحمد شوقي حسن، وبمشاركة الفنانين/القيمين: رانيا عاطف، ونادية منير، وعلي زرعي.
البرنامج بيشمل:

• جلسات نقاش مفتوحة
• ورش عملية مع المرشدين
• زيارة لمؤسسة فنية لفهم تنوع المؤسسات واقتصاد الفن
• حلقة ختامية عن الفن كمهنة

In August of 2025, Darb 1718 will launch “Mada” – a mentorship and hands-on experimentation program dedicated to emerging artists, students and recent graduates from art disciplines.

“Mada” is a unique experience designed by the artistic director of the program, Ahmed Shawky, to broaden the horizons of emerging artists and encouraging them to ask questions, explore mediums, and develop their artistic paths with passion, awareness, and responsibility.

"مدى" هو تجربة مختلفة صممها الفنان والقيم الفني أحمد شوقي حسن علشان توسع مدارك الفنانين المبتدئين، وتشجعهم تطرح أسئلة، ويكتشفوا أوساط جديدة، ويطوروا مشاريعهم الفنية بشغف ووعي ومسؤولية.

Congratulations to Darb 1718's founder, Moataz Nasr, for being selected as the head curator for the upcoming Alexandria Biennale.

Following the Minister of Culture's approval:
Formation of the High Committee for the 27th Edition of the Alexandria Biennale

After a 12-year hiatus, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Hennou, Minister of Culture, has issued a decree forming the high committee for the 27th edition of the Alexandria Biennale for Mediterranean Countries — one of the most prestigious international art events hosted by Egypt — scheduled to take place in 2026.

The committee has been formed as follows:
Head of the Fine Arts Sector, Dr. Walid Qannoush, as General Director of the Biennale, Dr. Mostafa Abdel Moaty as President, with the following members:

Artist Gamal Hosni, Dr. Amal Nassar, Artist Alia El Guiridi, Mrs. Hassana Rashid, Mrs. Mai El Dibb, Mr. Rachid Kamel, Mr. Ahmed El Shabouri, Mrs. Lamia Kamel, Mr. Hisham El Khazindar, Engineer Walid Arafa, Mrs. Omnia Abdelbar, Artist Moataz Nasr as General Curator (Commissaire Général), Dr. Salwa Hamdi, Dr. Ali Said, a representative from the Alexandria Governorate, and a representative from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The first meeting of the committee is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, to begin discussing the general framework of the upcoming edition, setting the agenda, and planning the practical steps for Egyptian and international participation. A press conference will follow to announce all details and information related to the upcoming edition.

The return of the Biennale reflects the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to reviving and supporting major international art events held in Egypt, and to opening new horizons for Egyptian artists to engage with contemporary artistic movements.

تشكيل اللجنة العليا للدورة (27) من بينالي الإسكندرية

بعد غياب دام 12 عاماً أصدر الدكتور أحمد فؤاد هَنو، وزير الثقافة، قراراً بتشكيل اللجنة العليا للدورة السابعة والعشرين لبينالي الإسكندرية لدول حوض البحر المتوسط أحد أعرق الفعاليات الفنية الدولية التي تحتضنها مصر ، المقرر تنظيمها في عام ٢٠٢٦.
وجاء تشكيل اللجنة كالتالي:
رئيس قطاع الفنون التشكيلية الدكتور وليد قانوش رئيساً عاماً للبينالي، الدكتور مصطفى عبد المعطي رئيساً، وعضوية كل من (الفنان جمال حسني، الدكتورة أمل نصر، الفنانة علياء الجريدي، السيدة/ حسنة رشيد، السيدة/ مي الديب، السيد/ رشيد كامل، السيد/ أحمد الشابوري، السيدة/ لمياء كامل، السيد/ هشام الخازندار، المهندس وليد عرفة، السيدة/ أمنية عبدالبر، لفنان معتز نصر "قوميسيرًا عامًا"، الدكتورة سلوى حمدي، الدكتور علي سعيد، ممثل عن محافظة الإسكندرية، ممثل عن وزارة السياحة والأثار)
هذا ومن المُقرر أن تُعقد أولى اجتماعات اللجنة يوم الخميس الموافق 17 يوليو 2025، للبدء في مناقشة الإطار العام للدورة الجديدة، وتحديد جدول الأعمال والخطوات التنفيذية للمشاركة المصرية والدولية، على أن يتم عقد مؤتمراً صحفياً فيما بعد للإعلان عن كافة التفاصيل والمعلومات الخاصة بالدورة المرتقبة.
ويمثل عودة البينالي تأكيدًاً على حرص وزارة الثقافة على إحياء ودعم الفعاليات الفنية الدولية الكبرى التي تُقام على أرض مصر، وفتح آفاق جديدة أمام الفنانين المصريين للتفاعل مع التيارات الفنية المعاصرة.

في حكايات السيرة الهلالية، بطلات منسيات. نساء بياخدوا مكانهم أخيرًا على مسرح درب، من خلال صوت رحاب خلف.

بنبدأ السلسلة بأغاني خضرا محمد خِضر، و شخصية خضرا الشريفة، رمز الصبر والتقوى، وأم البطل أبو زيد الهلالي.

"Folklore Women", a musical series with Rehab Khalaf starts July 4th

In this series, The women of the Banu Hilal Saga, long unsung in their heroism, take the stage at Darb, embodied through Rehab Khalaf’s voice and presence.

We begin with songs of Khadra Mohamed Khedr, and the character Khadra Al-Sharifa: a symbol of resilience and devotion, and the mother of Abu Zaid Al-Hilali, the saga’s central hero.

Writers in Darb ended their week with a moment of creative pause at last Thursday night’s poetry workshop.

Musings took turns — prompted by Samira Saleh — moving through a circle of participants with varying experience, exchanging inspiration and connecting through the very process of creative writing.

We're grateful to have had Samira for this workshop, as part of her artist residency, which brought with it a gentle breeze of poeticism to our space.

أنهى الكُتّاب في درب أسبوعهم باستراحة إبداعية في ورشة الشعرليلة الخميس مع سميرة صالح.

الأفكار دارت في دايرة المشاركين — بتوجيه من سميرة — ما بين أصحاب خبرة وكتّاب في بداية الطريق، يتبادلوا الإلهام ويتقابلوا في وسط كتاباتهم.

سعداء جداً بتقديم سميرة للورشة، كجزء من إقامتها الفنية اللي جابت معاها نسمة شعرية لطيفة لمكاننا.
إقامة سميرة والورشة كانت بدعم من Flanders Literature.

Darb Cinema Club returns Saturday, June 28th!

Imagination is best unbound, but even better when captured through an independent lens and beamed onto our screen for the second volume of Cinema Club.

These monthly screenings are a hub for filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike, and a tribute to the core themes of cinema. Every last Saturday of the month, we screen independent films followed by open discussions with their makers.

For this edition, we’re not going down the rabbit hole. We’re watching what Wonderland brings: a curated selection of films that celebrate the human imagination.
