When we first inaugurated Oum El Dounia in 2004, overlooking Tahrir Square, we wanted to create a magical place, in the heart of Cairo, that combines high quality crafts and a bookstore entirely focused on the Middle East, a store where one could have a good time, discover Egypt’s craftsmanship, as well as find an French translation of an Egyptian novel. Over time, we have enlarged our store, expa
nded the choice of our items, added a bookstore corner, organized cultural events, and also opened another store in Maadi. In 2014, Oum El Dounia celebrates its 10th anniversary. Today we work directly with about a hundred craftsmen from all parts of the country (independent craftsmen, women communities, NGOs, cooperatives, ….) for whom Oum El Dounia is an attractive showcase for their beautiful work. We collaborate with them to develop new items while at the same time honoring their skills and traditions, often handed down from one generation to the next. Our bookstore was the very first in Egypt to obtain the approval, given by the French Centre National du Livre in Paris, of “Francophone reference bookstore.”
This 10th anniversary will also be a great opportunity for us to launch an online store. We want it to echo the image of our Tahrir and Maadi outlets―colorful, friendly, creative, and professional. “Créer un lieu magique, en plein Centre-ville du Caire, qui mélangerait un artisanat de qualité et une librairie spécialisée sur le monde arabe, un endroit où l on prendrait plaisir à passer un agréable moment, une adresse où l’on découvrirait le plus beau de l’artisanat d’Egypte ou un roman de littérature égyptienne traduite en français » … c’est ce que nous avions en tête en inaugurant Oum El Dounia, en 2004, en bordure de la place Tahrir. Au fil des années, nous avons agrandi cette boutique, élargi son choix, développé sa librairie, créé des évènements culturels et ouvert un autre point de vente, à Maadi. En 2014, Oum El Dounia fête ses 10 années d’existence. Aujourd’hui, nous travaillons en direct avec une centaine d’artisans des quatre coins du pays (artisans indépendants, communautés de femmes, ONG, programmes coopératifs, …) pour lesquels Oum El Dounia est une belle vitrine de leur noble travail. Nous collaborons avec eux pour développer de nouveaux objets aux lignes réactualisées, tout en valorisant leur savoir-faire, souvent transmis de génération en génération. Notre librairie a été la première en Egypte, à obtenir l’agrément Librairie francophone de référence, attribué par le Centre national du livre (Paris). Ce 10ème anniversaire est aussi l’occasion d’ouvrir notre boutique en ligne (www.oumeldounia.com). Nous l’avons voulue à l’image de nos magasins : colorée, accueillante, créative et professionnelle.
