Darb 1718 Egyptian Contemporary Art and Culture Center is a registered non-profit organization Darb 1718 is an Egyptian non-profit organisation founded in 2008.

Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Centre is an Egyptian non-profit organization founded in 2008. In the midst of historic Old Cairo emerges a beating heart for contemporary art and culture in Egypt. Its facilities include a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that host different art mediums and cultural events. Darb 1718 houses two art exhibition spaces, theater, dance, and concert stages, an outdoor cinema for independent film screenings, gardens and rooftops, in addition to an artist residency to accommodate international artists and curators from all around the world. The center provides workshops, programs, and initiatives to educate and mentor emerging artists and offer them a space to exhibit their work alongside established artists. It also organises music festivals, concerts, spaces that are available for rent, and much more. Darb 1718 is a hub connecting Egyptian artists from several walks of life with the local and international arts and culture scene. It is an art nucleus and a gathering point for all parallel events in Egypt. انضموا إلينا في افتتاح ما لم يُقَال | UNSPOKEN ، معرض فني من فكرة وتنسيق سلمى حجازي، بالتعاون مع شادي غالي – معالج بالفن، وبدعم من درب ١٧١٨.

ينطلق المعرض من تجربة فنية تستكشف ما يصعب قوله بالكلمات، وكيف يمكن للفن أن يصبح مساحة للتعبير عن مشاعر وتجارب وذكريات لا تجد دائمًا طريقها إلى اللغة. من خلال مجموعة من الأعمال الفنية والتجارب الحسية والتفاعلية، تتشكل رحلة تتأمل في الألم، والهشاشة، ومحاولات التعافي، وما يتركه الإنسان خلفه من أثر.

Join us for the opening of **“UNSPOKEN | ما لم يُقَال,”** an art exhibition conceived and curated by Salma Hegazi, in collaboration with Shady Ghaly – Art Therapist, and supported by Darb 1718.

The exhibition unfolds through an artistic exploration of what is difficult to put into words, and how art can become a space for expressing emotions, experiences, and memories that do not always find their way into language. Through a collection of artworks, sensory experiences, and interactive elements, the exhibition forms a journey that reflects on pain, vulnerability, attempts at healing, and the traces we leave behind.

Our weekly pottery workshops at Hakeem’s Studio in Fustat are open for individual and group bookings.

Explore the fundamentals of pottery and ceramics through hands-on practice, from hand-building and clay engraving to shaping pots on an electric pottery wheel.

Sessions are confirmed once the group is complete, and registered participants will be contacted to confirm the date and details.

انضموا إلينا يوم السبت ٥ سبتمبر، للتعرّف على أساسيات النحت مع محمود كشك.

خلال الورشة، سيتعرّف المشاركون على الطين وأدوات النحت، ومبادئ الكتلة والحجم والقياس والنسب، إلى جانب مقدمة في الأسس التشريحية وتقنيات التشكيل. كما سيخوض المشاركون تجربة عملية في التشكيل والنحت من خلال تنفيذ عمل ثلاثي الأبعاد بسيط.

Join us on Saturday, 5 September, to explore the fundamentals of sculpture with Mahmoud Keshk.

During the workshop, participants will explore clay and sculpting tools, the principles of volume, measurement, and proportion, as well as an introduction to basic human anatomy and sculpting techniques. Participants will also gain hands-on experience in sculpting and shaping by creating a simple 3D form.

تعالوا/ن اكتبوا/ن معنا في سلسلة كتابة ذاتية وتعبير إبداعي تمتد عبر أمسيات الخميس طوال أغسطس.

هذه السلسلة ليست لتعلّم الكتابة الإبداعية، ولكنها أقرب ما يكون لمساحة للتفكير بصوت عالٍ، والكتابة لأجل الذات، ومشاركة أشخاص آخرين يفعلون الشيء ذاته. تتنقل الجلسات بين القراءة والنقاش والكتابة، وتنتهي السلسلة بمعرض جماعي صغير للغرف التي تنشأ على مدار أربعة أسابيع.

السلسلة نسوية في منطلقها، ومفتوحة لكل من اضطر/ت إلى التفاوض مع التوقعات الجندرية المتعلقة بالبيت والمساحة الخاصة. الجلسات بالعربية والإنجليزية والعامية، أو بأي لغة تُقرّبك/ِ أكثر مما تريد/ين قوله.

Come write with us in a self-writing and creative arts series, across Thursday evenings in August.

This is a space to think out loud, to write for yourself, and to be in a room with other people doing the same thing. Sessions move between reading, conversation, and writing, and end with a small group presentation of the creative work that comes out of four weeks together.

The series is rooted in feminist thinking and open to everyone who has had to navigate gender expectations around home and private space. Sessions are in Arabic, English, and colloquial dialect — or whatever language gets you closest to what you’re trying to say.

Facilitated by Aisha Aljaedy, feminist writer and anthropology researcher based in Cairo.

Jusoor | چسور

Continuing the Jusoor series, Darb 1718 and Left Bank present a screening of new experimental nonfiction films from Iran.

The screening will be followed by a moderated discussion with two Cairo-based Iranian artists and cultural practitioners, reflecting on experimental film movements, artistic practice, and cultural exchange.

Join us for The Future Image, a research presentation and talk by Egyptian artist Heba Y. Amin.

In dialogue with the works of Vincenzo Valente, the talk explores how 19th-century Orientalism continues to shape contemporary ways of seeing — from colonial photography to today’s AI technologies. Through filmic essays, archival research, and digital artifacts, Amin reflects on representation, surveillance, and the lasting impact of colonial image-making.

The project, promoted by the Museo Castromediano, is realized in collaboration with KORA Centro del Contemporaneo and RAMDOM. It is based on a dialogue between Heba Y. Amin—whose work critically reinterprets Orientalist histories from a non-European perspective—and the paintings of Vincenzo Valente, who left Italy for Egypt in the late 19th century and lived between Alexandria and Cairo.

في حوار مع أعمال فينتشنزو فالينتي، تستكشف المحاضرة كيف لا تزال الاستشراقية في القرن التاسع عشر تؤثر على طرق الرؤية المعاصرة — من التصوير الفوتوغرافي الاستعماري إلى تقنيات الذكاء الاصطناعي اليوم. من خلال مقالات فيلمية، وأبحاث أرشيفية، ومواد رقمية، تتأمل أمين في قضايا التمثيل، والمراقبة، والأثر المستمر للصورة الاستعمارية.

يأتي هذا المشروع بتنظيم متحف كاستروميديانو، وبالتعاون مع كورا سنترو ديل كونتيمبورانيو ورامدوم. ويعتمد المشروع على حوار بين هبة أمين — المعروفة بقراءاتها النقدية وغير الأوروبية لتاريخ الاستشراق — وأعمال الرسّام الإيطالي فينتشنزو فالينتي، الذي غادر إيطاليا إلى مصر في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وعاش بين الإسكندرية والقاهرة.
