Baltic Neotango Festival

Neotango is a contemporary evolution of traditional Argentine tango. It’s not a “new” style in the sense of replacing classical tango, but rather a reinterpretation that emerged in the 1990s and 2000s, influenced by other music and modern techniques. It is danced both at neolongas (milongas with modern music) and at dedicated festivals. Here are its main characteristics:

🎶 Music

It is danced to electronic tango, nuevo tango (Astor Piazzolla, Gotan Project, Bajofondo, Tanghetto…) or even fusions with rock, jazz, world music, and electronic music. It may also include modern reinterpretations of traditional tangos.

💃🕺 Dance

It is based on Argentine tango technique (walking, turns, connection, embrace) but opens up to more exploration. Less rigid forms of embrace are used (close, open, switching according to the music). It incorporates elements from other dances (contact improvisation, contemporary, salsa, swing) — especially for turns, floor movements, suspensions, etc.

🌐 Social atmosphere

Neolongas tend to be more informal and creative than traditional milongas. Strict codes (like cabeceo, tandas, or cortinas) are not always followed, although some organizers retain them partially.

✨ Spirit

Freedom to experiment, improvise, and reinterpret the music. Focus on connection with the partner and with the music rather than on rigid sequences. It seeks to attract both younger audiences and dancers from other disciplines. In short:
