KROKODIL - Pollution / Lady Of Attraction (Liberty, Germany, 1970)

Krokodil are a Swiss band formed in the late 60s. Although they are frequently listed as a Krautrock band it‘s pretty obvious that they have a very strong blues background. Throughout their first three albums they get more and more psychedelic in their arrangements and sounds.

This single features „Lady Of Attraction“ of their high-priced third album „An Invisible World Revealed“ (United Artists, 1971) as B-Side. The A-Side „Pollution“ is a non-album song. Driven by a groovy, distorted guitar lick, furious drum fills and bluesy harmonica lines it’s probably the heaviest song the band has ever released.

CAN - Moonshake / Future Days (United Artists, Germany, 1973)

„The Can“ were formed in Cologne, Germany in the late 60s. With a modern classical background (Schmidt and Czukay studied with Stockhausen) the band always focused on an experimental approach to break the boundaries of contemporary pop music.

Their most famous songs are actually way too long for single releases (You Doo Right, Halleluwah, Future Days), but some of them were nevertheless edited for a single release. Although „Future Days“ is probably the core-piece of the 1973 album released with the same title, „Moonshake“ became the A-side of this United Artists single.

It‘s really hard to describe the magic of CAN‘s musical output. The repetitive but always unusual rhythm patterns, samples and sounds, the avantgarde sound experiments and the psychedelic funkiness are probably the most striking in this period. In my humble opinion CAN is the most influential band of the Krautrock movement by far!

MC5 - Back In The USA / Tutti Frutti (Atlantic, Germany, 1970)

This band is a total classic! The rock powerhouse named MC5 started its career in 1964 in Detroit, USA. Considering its political background, the simple and straightforward songs and the powerful presence on stage MC5 can be regarded as ancestors of America‘s punk scene.

Original singles of MC5 are hard to find and pretty expensive. The one pictured above is a Germany-only release and contains two cover songs. Both songs are typical rock‘n‘roll standards - but you can definitely feel the high volume and the incredible energy this band had in the late 60s and early 70s!

Undisputed rock milestone!

Hoppi & The Beau Heems - I Missed My Cloud / So Hard (Ariola, Germany, about 1968)

Hoppi & The Beau Heems are a mid-60s underground band from Tampa, Florida, USA. There is hardly any information on the band which makes it even more interesting to dig deeper. They worked with producer Phil Gernhardt and Songwriter James Lee McCullough who are also known for their collaborations with „The Royal Guardsmen“ - another Laurie Records band from Florida
Hoppie & The Beau Heems released only two singles and one EP from 1967 to 1968.
„I Missed My Cloud / So Hard“ is the first single of the band originally released in 1967 as a promo on Laurie Records. There hardly exist any „picture covers“ of the releases which makes the single pretty rare besides the fact that it is an European release.

The style can be described as organ driven garage rock mixed with psychedelic rock. The assumed croaking voice of singer Howard Simons gives the A-Side „I Missed My Cloud“ an unique and strange feeling. The short 2:12 minutes song is only interrupted by a single note „guitar solo“.

The Alan Bown - Pyramid / Crash Landing (Island, Germany, 1970)

Alan Bown is a trumpet player and songwriter born in Slough, UK. He formed his own band „The Alan Bown Set“ in 1965. There were several line-up changes until the band finally quit in 1972. Although the band started a lot of careers (for example Robert Palmer or Mel Collins (King Crimson, Camel)) and although it was a popular live band they never had a bigger commercial success.

This single contains two songs which are featured on the album „Listen“ (Island, 1970). It captures the band on its peak blending progressive jazz rock with traditional blues rock elements and hints of psychedelic rock.

„Pyramid“ is a very intense rock hymn with excellent vocals, a pumping and heavy rhythym section and beautiful brass lines! The guitar offers some heartwarming fuzz outbursts that instantly give you goosebumps.

An underrated gem!

Led Zeppelin - The Ocean / Dancing Days (Atlantic, Germany, 1973)

No need to tell anyone familiar with classic rock music about this band! Led Zeppelin and their blues-rooted hard rock is an outstanding appearance in the late sixties and early seventies for sure.
This single was only published in Germany and Austria and contains two songs of their fifth studio album "Houses Of The Holy" (also advertised on the rear).

The A-side "The Ocean" offers an impelling guitar riff which breaks with a classic 4/4-rhythm. The very quiet a capella part in the middle of the song is also a very funny turn to attract attention with in your DJ set.
The B-side "Dancing Days" catches the listener's attention with its main guitar theme inspired by Indian music. The repetitive and catchy character of this riff and the unexcitedly songwriting might be the main reasons why "Dancing Days" was the first song of the album offered to radio stations.

The Bintangs - He Didn't Wanna Go Home / The Dying Of Mr. Fernandez (Decca, Germany, 1969)

The Bintangs formed in 1961 are one of the oldest and still active bands in the Netherlands.
On their first releases the band offers a great mix of rhythm & blues and psychedelic rock.
The A-side "He Didn't Wanna Go Home" is a upbeat blues rocker which sounds like a hybrid of a light Captain Beefheart verse with a The Rolling Stones chorus interrupted by an overdriven guitar outburst.
The B-side "The Dying Of Mr. Fernandez" surprises with a proggy theme lead by an acoustic guitar and a flute. After a minute the song suddenly ends and a narrator tells a story about the death of Mr. Fernandez backed by flute-interjections and a monotonous bluesy electric guitar riff. All of a sudden the main theme kicks in again leaving some space for a wahwah-driven psychedelic guitar solo.
