It was so nice being back at UKW - Kraftwerk Rostock! I can’t remember off the top of my head the first time I played here, but I remember just how confident I felt that it was one of the most unique movements I had seen in quite some time, and something that I wanted to be a part of for as long as I could be of use. I’ve probably told this story a lot, but this is really a house built by an unimaginable force of mostly volunteers, and I think this is really what is the force that keeps it going.
It seems like once a month there’s a new story covering how clubs are struggling, but it’s very rare there’s a discussion that involves finding a way to create a culture that goes beyond the names on a weekly lineup. UKW could have never even opened its doors without a massive squad of people who were invested in the vision of the culture they wanted to create. It’s not that the musical curation isn’t important in a club, but if you only sell people on a lineup, you’ll always struggle to create culture, because you’ll eventually run out of acts that get people off their couch on a Saturday night if they don’t know they’re going to find their people at the same place that night.
In a world that allows the entire world of music on demand, the entire city of dating options one swipe away, and social media that allows infinite channel surfing, there is a shortage on meaningful community, not excitement. I know most of my advice isn’t that great, but if your club or party is suffering and you think it’s because DJ fees (for the ones you want) are too expensive, considerer having a closer look at this little spot at what they call the concrete lady in Rostock for some insights: offer something longer lasting and more meaningful than the here and now, and simply allow the music you believe in to be the soundtrack.
Much love to all the Rostock UKW crew, I really appreciate all you do for the music culture we love and what you stand for. Keep going! ❤️
