6: Front-lit

Since the last post was about shooting back-lit, i.o.w the sun behind your subjects, what about when the sun is in front?

Good question. Below you can see a clear example. In essence, its all about what you want to achieve. Front-lit can have a more contrasty look whereas back-lit shots can look more "washed-out".

When you shoot back-lit, every little fine detail can become accentuated by the sunlight illuminating it. Think strands of hair, bubbles being blown etc. Its like seeing dust through the sunlight when you make your bed in the mornings.

Front-lit is great when you want to show vivid and contrasts. You might have to deal with harsh shadows, especially in the faces, but if the overall look of your shot promotes this contrasty hard-light feel, then it makes perfect sense.

Why not make a test? someone mid-day in hard light and then do the same shoot in the late afternoon when the sun is low, both with the subject facing the sun as well as having the sun behind them. Then look at the results. They all have a function, it's you who decide how you want to tell the tale.

Have fun.

#5: into the sun.

I can't recall the number of times someone has seen me shooting into the sun and commenting that this is not how one takes . "that picture won't work!" they say. Truth is, you can and it does!
It's all about your position, and the time of day.

Let's concentrate on what works...generally, the lower the sun, the weaker it becomes, plus it gives a beautiful goldish light. Thus mornings or early evenings are best for nice .

Hide the sun behind your subject when as the will have a difficult time doing so with the sun pouring into the . Then position yourself, without changing your distance to the subject to take the picture.
Note that your background might be over-exposed as your camera will take a meter-reading on the "dark-side" of your subject. You can adjust this difference in brightness by manually adjusting your , or . More on this in another post.

When the sun hits your lens at just the right spot, you might even get a nice . These can look a lot better in real life than those added artificially.

Enjoy.
