Circularity is a must, but why?

At the IFAT Munich Startup Area, Dr. Sebastian Beblawy from EveryCarbon, Sofia Delgado from SEAMORETECH and Dr. Estelle Clerc from CellX Biosolutions demonstrated how circular technologies can turn overlooked resources into new value, from domestic feedstocks and material recovery to nature-based solutions for removing pollutants.

Because circularity is not only an environmental necessity. It is also an opportunity to build more resilient industries.

Where do you see the greatest untapped potential for turning waste into value?

18/08/2026

How would you end the sentence “Circularity is a must, because…”?

That’s what we asked the participants of the IFAT Munich Startup Area. Filip Kuzminski from Enodo Robotics, Katja Wagner from TURNS circular system and Phillip Grimm from Pluvion shared why circular solutions are essential, from transforming the textile industry to protecting water resources and advancing intelligent waste sorting.

Their message is clear: change cannot wait.

What will it take to move circular solutions from ambition to action?

Important Update: IFAT Saudi Arabia is scheduled to take place from September 4 to 6, 2027, at the Riyadh Front Exhibition and Conference Center. The decision to reschedule was made thoughtfully, in close consultation with the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN), the event’s Founding and Strategic Partner, as well as our local partners, key clients, stakeholders and exhibitors

This adjustment aims to ensure the event builds seamlessly on the success of its inaugural edition in January 2026 and creates optimal conditions for exhibitors, visitors, speakers, and our delegates community.

We look forward to bringing the industry together again in Riyadh in September 2027 and continuing to drive collaboration, innovation, and sustainable solutions across the region.

🌡️ Extreme heat and prolonged drought are affecting large parts of Europe, underscoring just how strategic water has become for economic stability, resilience, and sustainable growth. 💧

At the same time, linear economic models are reaching their limits. The future lies in circular systems that connect water, energy, raw materials, and data more intelligently—strengthening resource security, reducing dependencies, and creating new value.

In the latest Handelsblatt Journal special publication on water, Katharina Schlegel and Philipp Eisenmann explain why the water sector is becoming a key industry of transformation—and how IFAT Munich and the international IFAT network help drive innovation, technology transfer, and global collaboration.

The message is clear: Circularity is a must. ♻️

💧 Longer droughts. More intense rainfall. Cities need to be prepared for both.

The ongoing drought affecting large parts of Southern and Central Europe is a reminder that water is becoming an increasingly precious resource. In Munich, local authorities have even introduced temporary restrictions on water use.

How can cities become more resilient?

One promising approach is the "Sponge City" concept. Instead of channeling rainwater away as quickly as possible, sponge cities capture, store and naturally absorb it—helping to reduce flood risks during heavy rainfall while making more water available during dry periods.

In our latest Industry Insights article, we explore how the Sponge City concept works and why it is becoming an essential strategy for climate-resilient urban development.

No circular economy without collaboration. ♻️

In our IFAT Munich video series "Finish the Sentence", we ask industry experts to complete a different statement in every episode.

This week's challenge:

"To make circular material loops truly work, industry, policy and waste management need to..."

The verdict? Different voices, one common message: more collaboration.

Because circularity doesn't happen in silos. It requires alignment across the entire value chain.

How would you finish the sentence? 👇
