Prof. Streif will explore how Digital Twins can accelerate innovation in controlled environment agriculture, improving resource efficiency, resilience, and scalability. This talk bridges cutting-edge control theory with real-world applications for sustainable food production.

👨‍🔬 Who is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Streif?
Prof. Streif studied Engineering Cybernetics in Stuttgart and Sheffield before earning his Ph.D. with distinction in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Magdeburg and the Max Planck Institutes. After leading research groups and teaching at Magdeburg and Ilmenau, he was appointed Full Professor at TU Chemnitz in 2015, where he also serves as Dean of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Information Technology. Since 2023, he has been Group Leader at Fraunhofer IME and a member of the Steering Committee for Controlled Environment Agriculture at DAFA. His research combines robust, adaptive, and learning-based control methods with applications in sustainable food production, vertical farming, and bio-based systems.

Prof. Nicola will explore how vertical farming can reduce land and water use, lower carbon emissions, and enable resilient local food production. At the same time, she will critically examine the challenges of crop diversity, innovation, energy demands, economic viability, and scalability that must be addressed for vertical farming to truly serve as a catalyst for climate action.

Prof. Nicola is Full Professor of Horticulture at the University of Turin, specializing in advanced cultivation systems, soilless and hydroponic culture, vertical and urban farming, and fresh produce quality and safety. Andrea will present LWG’s public-sector vertical farming pilot - a 40-foot container equipped with hydroponic ebb-and-flow systems, adjustable LED lighting, and precision fertigation. Installed at LWG’s research farm in Bamberg, the system tracks energy, water, nutrient use, and CO₂ to assess real-world viability and sustainability.

Focusing on leafy greens, herbs, and alternative crops like water spinach, the project emphasizes research and public transparency over profitability—serving as a replicable model for state-supported agtech innovation.
