Colonial-critical city tour through Ehrenfeld with e.V.

What do Cologne’s Takuplatz, Iltisstraße, and Lansstraße have to do with China and colonialism?

In the so-called “Chinesen-Veedel” (Chinese Quarter), the violent invasion of eastern China by the German Empire at the end of the 19th century is still remembered – but from the perspective of the colonial occupiers. Whose history is told here, and whose is silenced?

Join us on a critical search for traces, where we ask: from whose viewpoint is history narrated, what remains invisible, and how have Asian communities in Cologne resisted racism?

📍 Together with e.V., we invite you to a city walk through Neuehrenfeld.

RJM meets MOK: Colonial Traces in Qingdao – A Dialogue Tour through ***Invisible City***

The German colonial presence in China has left traces that are still visible today - also in Cologne.

Photographer Jimmi Wing Ka Ho explores the city of Qingdao (under German colonial rule from 1898–1914) through powerful photos and videos. His works engage in a critical dialogue with the RJM Photographoic Archive, questioning how colonial history is remembered – and where it remains invisible.

Join curators Dr. Daniel Suebsman (MOK - Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst) and Lucia Halder (RJM) for a dialogue tour through the exhibition.

Special guest: photographer Polina Kluss (Museumsdienst der Stadt Köln).

Artist Meets Archive #4 – Invisible City

🗓 Uncomfortable Memories – Confronting Colonial Family Legacies

What if a family heirloom holds a colonial past?
What if old family photos suddenly raise questions we’re not prepared to answer?

Colonial legacies are not just chapters in history books – they live on in our living rooms, photo albums, and family stories. But how do we deal with them?

As part of the exhibition „Invisible City“ by Wing Ka Ho, we invite you to a special conversation:
Journalist Kuhn, author of “Der chinesische Paravent”, and photographer Schönharting, known for her work “Das Erbe”, will discuss the personal and collective challenge of confronting colonial traces in private lives.

How can we learn to truly look?
What role does photography play in remembering – and forgetting?
How can images help make the invisible visible?

🖤 Sebastião Salgado has passed away.

We mourn one of the most committed photographers of our time. His images gave visibility to what is often ignored: social injustice, environmental destruction, and the legacies of colonialism.

From 29 October 2025 to 15 March 2026, the RJM will present his exhibition
“AMAZÔNIA – PHOTOGRAPHS BY SEBASTIÃO SALGADO” – a powerful tribute to the Amazon and a call for planetary justice and Indigenous rights.

Salgado’s work remains a testament to global solidarity.

Unsere erste Kinderführung von Kindern für Kinder fand am 18.05. zum Internationalen Museumstag statt!

In nur zwei Monaten haben Kinder & Jugendliche eine eigene Tour aus ihrer Sicht durch unsere Dauerausstellung entwickelt – mit selbst ausgewählten Stationen, Geschichten und Mitmachideen.

Ein riesiges Dankeschön an unsere großartigen Kinderguides – und an Mira Partharasathy fürs liebevolle Begleiten!

Tausend Dank an Lisa Khan und Joanna Sinoplu - für eure Koordination und eure Leidenschaft, mit der ihr Kinder stärkt und Räume für ihre Stimmen schafft!

Alle kleinen & großen Besucher*innen waren begeistert!

NEXT! ist das erste und einzige 📸 Fotofestival von jungen Menschen für junge Menschen in Deutschland, die eines gemeinsam haben: die Freude an der Fotografie!!!

NEXT! vernetzt, informiert und ermöglicht den Austausch mit Künstler*innen und Gleichgesinnten.

Das Festival bietet Workshops, Mitmach-Stationen und eine Gruppenausstellung mit Fotoarbeiten junger Talente von 6 bis 26 Jahren. Außerdem werden Ergebnisse vergangener Workshops gezeigt.

Artist Meets Archive #4 -
Curated by Lucia Halder, RJM

How visible is a city’s colonial past? Artist Jimmi Wing Ka Ho traces the history of the former colonial port city of Qingdao, which was under German occupation from 1898 to 1914. Using historical photographs from the RJM archive as a starting point, he explores the traces left by the city’s radical overhaul under colonial rule.

The exhibition is part of the Artist Meets Archive program #4, a cooperative project of the Internationale Photoszene Köln with the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, the Museum Ludwig, the Photographic Collection/SK Foundation for Culture, and the Cathedral Construction Archive (Dombauarchiv).
