For more than three decades, ICEF has supported trust, transparency, and professional standards in international education. Part of that role is communicating the benefits of international education so that the sector can continue to develop sustainably.

Made Impact’s Million Stories Initiative collects real stories and evidence from across the global community, bringing the benefits of international education to life. ICEF is proud to be a Founding Partner of this important initiative.

On 1 September, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, ICEF CEO Markus Badde will join moderator Dr Maureen Manning, alongside Melissa Torres, Mark Overmann and Dr Steffen Sommer, for Breaking the Blockers: Unifying and Evolving the Sector at the Made Impact Summit.

At a time when regulation is tightening across leading study destinations, our sector needs to demonstrate the value of international education beyond its own community more effectively than ever.

What are the blockers preventing us from building broader understanding and support for international education? How can we demonstrate its impact more convincingly, build greater trust, and bring governments, communities and other stakeholders with us?

Those are some of the questions the panel will tackle in New York next week.

The Italian government has announced a new scholarship programme that will send 150,000 Italian high school students (upper secondary) and 15,000 accompanying teachers to other European countries for the purposes of language and cultural immersion.

The programme, which will draw €420 million from the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), covers student travel, living costs, food, and accommodation.

Italy is a major EU sending market for language studies and this new mobility programme, the largest language learning and mobility scholarship programme in the country’s history, is already attracting interest from study destinations. English UK, for example, have signalled to their members that they are “working with the Department for Business & Trade and the British Embassy Rome to present a unified UK offer.”

ICEF Agency Status (IAS) is a global accreditation framework for international education agencies, providing institutions and partners with a clear, independent means of verifying an agency’s identity and whether it meets baseline professional requirements to operate in international student recruitment.

Independently governed, IAS is supported by institutions and sector bodies across more than 50 countries, many of which reference it as a practical building block within their own quality assurance processes.

Hear more about the benefits of IAS from Diego Sanchez, Director International Affairs, Languages Canada.

ICEF is proud to be a Founding Partner of Made Impact, a new global initiative dedicated to demonstrating the real impact of international education through evidence and lived experience.

Through the Million Stories Initiative, Made Impact aims to build the world’s largest archive of international education stories, bringing together the experiences of students, alumni, institutions and organisations from around the world. As a Founding Partner, ICEF will help engage its global community in capturing and sharing these stories to build a stronger evidence base for the value of international education.

The initiative will also be highlighted at the Made Impact Summit, taking place on 31 August and 1 September 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where leaders from across the sector will explore how this growing body of evidence can strengthen the case for international education globally.

ICEF CEO Markus Badde said: “International education changes lives every day. By bringing together real stories and credible evidence from across our global community, we can demonstrate that impact more clearly and more convincingly than ever before.”

As Made Impact founder Chris Arnold puts it, the ambition is to move our sector “away from isolated anecdotes and toward empirical proof of its societal value.” That is an ambition ICEF is very pleased to support.
