This important research addresses a key issue where there is surprisingly little evidence. We encourage intersex people to consider responding.
"My name is Mandy Henningham and I am a PhD student and postgraduate teaching fellow from the University of Sydney. Over my years studying sexual health, I developed a strong passion for intersex rights concerns that are still being faced in Australia and as such, have chosen to follow this passion into my PhD research.
"We are conducting a research study where we have created a comprehensive survey for individuals with intersex variations. Our past research has identified that there has been a long history of mismanagement by healthcare professionals for intersexed individuals which has potentially resulted in low-severe psychological/psychosexual distress, infertility, depression and other related repercussions...
"Our current project is to gain further information and insight from a number of aspects of life of individuals with intersex variations. The survey calls for personal reflection upon their own childhood, relationships, gender, history with healthcare professionals, sexual satisfaction and the opportunity to participate in an interview or share any other thoughts with us (though interviews are not compulsory). We believe it is very important to include a number of aspects of life in our study as previous research/literature is limited on some quality of life aspects that could be highly valuable information. This will help us develop a comprehensive study outlining as many possible issues with previous management as well as highlighting the needs of the intersex community. This study has ethics approval from the University of Sydney (Ethics project no. 2014/225)."
