‘After you reach a certain age, they think you’re over. Well, I will never be over, I’ll be making records, if I have to sell them out of the trunk of my car, I have done that in my past and I’d do it again.’

A few months before the first Coachella, Woodstock '99 hit New York and became a symbol of everything that could go wrong at a music festival. That aside, Sandra Collins was one of the handful of DJs to play the rock-oriented event. Her bio still mentions the lengthy, middle-of-the-night set, which all seems kind of crazy now.

How often do you see a DJ play more than an hour at a festival?

That's the kind of clout that Sandra Collins had during the 1990s dance music boom. She was a DJ whose name burst out of flyers on Melrose Avenue. That success continued in the early years of the new millennium. Some of her highest profile mixed CDs, like ones from Cream and Perfecto, came out after 2000. Sandra Collins still plays out and is featured alongside DJ Irene and DJ Rap in the movie, Girl.

“People were suspicious of a pretty woman making music on her own, with a vision. They couldn’t handle me. It was like: ‘It cannot be true that you can have lipstick on and make music.’”

Kemistry & Storm were an English drum and bass DJ and recording duo, composed of Kemistry (Valerie Olukemi A "Kemi" Olusanya) and Storm (Jayne Conneely). They were active in the 1990s. Along with Goldie, they founded the Metalheadz label in 1994.

They were recognized for being "some of the first women DJs to have a widely distributed album" in a "male-dominated genre of music". Kemistry & Storm were long-term friends since their upbringing in Kettering, and bloomed years later after changing careers to be full-time DJs at Touchdown FM and Defection FM and clubs as a duo. They used to not disclose they were women until they showed up for their sets.

Kemistry & Storm released their CD mix DJ-Kicks that deemed them as female spearheads in a male-dominated industry in 1999. It represents their sets as a whole–intense and lush, so much that they emulated the scene they would play until Kemistry, born Valerie Olukemi A “Kemi” Olusanya, sadly passed away in a car accident. Jane “Storm” Connely still DJs and talks fondly while remembering Kemistry, always seeing herself as a duo.

Cinthie is an example of a DJ, producer and label boss who’s had an enduring presence in Berlin, though she has really been able to cement her status in the past few years, locking down residencies at touchstones like Watergate and stepping up as an international touring artist. All this has been achieved by essentially just keeping it real, with her dedication to raw house sounds via her high-energy DJ sets, as well as her music labels.

She started DJing and producing in the late ‘90s and got signed to a big label in Berlin that saw her traveling the globe and releasing a few EPs.

After leaving her label, she started throwing illegal parties in Berlin and tried to keep the ball rolling by playing in different clubs here and there. She is a software developer by education, but now runs Beste Modus, Unison Wax, and Beste Freunde sub label.
