Exciting news! On Thursday, the Government launched its long awaited public consultation on updating the current antiquated marriage Law and we need your help!

Currently, if couples want to have a bespoke, personalised ceremony with a celebrant they must complete the legal paperwork separately with a registrar. But, all this could be changing as the consultation proposes that instead of licensing the building, it will be the officiant that is licensed.

The Government has recognised that the current wedding law, which dates back to 1836, no longer serves modern society and they also recognise that including independent celebrants with improved regulation is key to ensuring that going forward, every couple will be able to have a ceremony that includes all the things that are important to them.

The public consultation will be running for a period of 10 weeks, closing on 24th September and we need your help to ensure that independent celebrants are included. This will affect many generations to come. so, we are calling for everyone to have a once in a lifetime say in shaping marriage law in England and Wales.

There are a number of the questions being asked, but just respond to the questions that resonate and at the very least, please head to Chapter 6, question 27 “Do you agree with allowing independent officiants to conduct legally binding weddings?” Reply “Yes” and explain why you feel this is important. And remember to press submit so your voice is heard!

It is worth mentioning that this is not going to happen quickly and is unlikely to affect 2026 and 2027 couples as the proposals for new legislation would the need to pass through the full parliamentary process before becoming law.

My wedding and vow renewal ceremonies are a celebration of not only the bride and groom but, if they have children. the whole family.
