My comment about situation in flower industry in China for project that supports small and medium-scale enterprises in Russia. I’m posting here my full comment including the greetings from Chinese florists friends (check it out in the end, they are so lovely!): (thank you again!)

Key points:
- Most of the flower shops were shut down for one to two months.
- The outbreak coincided with Valentine's Day and International Women's Day. All public events in February, March and even April, were cancelled or postponed for several months.
- During this time the flower industry has lost more than 10 billion yuan (about 1,4 billion USD).
- Many florists have shifted to online.
- The overall demand for flowers has not recovered yet. The trading volume now is just 70% of the same period of the last year.
- In May, retail sales are expected to rise due to two holidays: Mother's Day and May 20 (one of the three Chinese Valentine’s Days).

Whilst we’re working at now (second China Internatiinal Import Expo), I’ve decided to post something from the last year‘s . I good chance to see a progress after one year. Work at the big exhibitions like this expo is always very intense, even nervous, but every time I learn a lot and boost my organizational skills to a next level. Seems an endless process to me tho 🧐

- What’s that? Your flowers are too big, we need “seledka” (means a herring in Russian) for meeting rooms!

- Seledka!
I had no idea what this irritated woman was talking about. What is that flower herring and why she wants it so badly.
I told her that we did everything based on a specification, all signed and approved, flowers don’t exceed a sight line so all good, but she insisted on changing everything and showed me photos from google. And then it finally downed on me: she wanted a long low centerpiece with a shape of a herring (seledka). In Russian a herring means a fish and we also have a salad with a name ”Herring under a fur coat”, which is usually served in a special long dish. It turned out that it’s a typical name for flower arrangements for the meeting rooms in Russia, and it’s a very official protocol flower requirements. I didn’t know that, and I had never done it before and felt a bit frustrated about redoing stuff. But I had no choice - this women was in charge of “doing things right”, so this arrangement you see in the picture was my first “seledka” which actually happened to meet Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev the next day at 😁

I’m working at now and it reminded me about this very same time last year. I’ve done many other herrings since then, but this one is still my favorite 😆
