Just three hours from Shanghai, the rolling hills and fresh air of Moganshan offer a peaceful escape from city life. Once a countryside retreat for Shanghai’s colonial-era elite, Moganshan’s lush bamboo forests now attract modern adventurers seeking nature and renewal.

On The Hutong’s Moganshan program, students reconnect with the natural world and experience the lifestyle of the local bamboo farmer, engaging in hands-on farming practices that provide a window into this unique rural community.

At The Hutong, our Inner Mongolia program blends wild landscapes, living history, and hands-on learning to ignite curiosity, foster connection, and inspire positive impact.

Brian Drout, our Assistant General Manager has put together this insightful piece about this wonderful program!

We begin in the Yinkentala Desert, hiking across sweeping dunes under vast blue skies. Along the way, students practice ancient navigation traditions using aobaos - white stone cairns that once guided Mongolian herders across the land. Through our “Green Great Wall” learning service activity, we contribute to a grassroots effort to combat desertification and support the regeneration of desert ecosystems.

Throughout the journey, we explore the legacy of Genghis Khan and the transformative influence of the Silk Road, where lapis lazuli from Persia became woven into China’s iconic blue-and-white porcelain, and the Pax Mongolica enabled ideas, goods, and cultures to flow freely across Eurasia.

At Meidaizhao Temple, Tibetan Buddhist murals spark reflection on spiritual exchange and dynastic politics as our staff bring to life characters from history in our signature Hunt Through History scavenger hunt. Then it’s on to the grasslands, where we sleep in yurts, experience the rhythms of nomadic life, and try our hand at traditional Mongolian sports like wrestling and archery.

I’ll always remember the steam rising from a traditional hot pot shared with friends, the laugher of students as colleagues reenact ancient figures in temple courtyards, and the wind-swept steppe - where echoes of the past still linger in the air.

What a joy to bring the rich history and culture of Inner Mongolia to life with young learners across Asia.

Hangzhou: From Cultural Capital to Living Classroom

We have recently reimagined our learning journey; on a June program, students kicked things off in nearby Lin’an, cycling along the scenic Qingshan Lake Greenway and kayaking across the lake’s peaceful waters.

In Qingshan Village, they got their hands dirty with meaningful eco-service, clearing invasive species and restoring wetlands, while learning about sustainability from local experts.

Back in Hangzhou, they dove into creative challenges: painting umbrellas with a master artisan, performing in a student poetry slam, and tackling the Toad Hill Hop Hike, guided by tales from The Hutong’s Hooligans.

The Hutong’s Handbooks and daily reflections helped tie it all together, encouraging deeper thinking, supporting school values, and sparking personal growth. This is experiential learning in action: where culture, nature, service, and storytelling create an impactful educational experience.

The HK Hub wrapped up Q2 with an outing to Cheung Chau for the afternoon! Filled with hikes, beach games & all round chilled vibes.

Cheung Chau is a small, dumbbell-shaped island, known for its unique blend of natural beauty, fishing village charm, and cultural attractions.
The island’s sandy beaches and scenic family-friendly hiking trail is a huge attraction for people keen for a slower pace away from the fast paced city life.

Hong Kong is home to a vibrant natural landscape where rugged mountain peaks overlook secluded bays. Around 40% of Hong Kong is protected country park, meaning there’s always a quiet peak to catch a sunset or take a break from the urban jungle. For our Hong Kong hub, populated by avid trail runners and hiking enthusiasts, that’s what makes it special.
Here are the top ten trails that have captured the hearts (and hiking boots!) of our Hutongers!

We are thrilled to announce that we are expanding our programming further into Southeast Asia—specifically into one of its most captivating kingdoms, Cambodia.

Our newest destination offering, Cambodia: Khmer Culture & Service Learning, combines meaningful service-learning opportunities with authentic cultural engagement. This program comes to life through our partnership with We Care Cambodia, an impressive local NGO founded by Greg Ladner in 2009, which provides educational and welfare support to rural villages surrounding Kol Thmey, a few hours east of Siem Reap.

Reach out if you’d like to learn more or if you think this service and cultural engagement experience would be a good fit for your student group.

Northern Yunnan isn’t the easiest place to get to, but it’s well worth the journey. It’s a place where ancient trade routes come to life, and where jutting up against the mighty Himalayas, you’ll experience some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. For centuries, this rugged terrain shielded the area’s many ethnic groups from the mighty Han-dominated empires of China’s past. Each stop we visit was once a stop along the ancient Tea and Horse Road, a trading route that transported goods from Yunnan into the wilds of Tibet for almost a thousand years.

If you get the chance to visit, you must. If you would like any tips, reach out!
