44 years (and probably a few extra pounds to show for it) spent loving every minute of this…
From Wednesday afternoons after school to the very first teenage parties, from mobile discos to local gigs, then from gigs to clubs, and everything else that followed — it flies by in the end, when you do things for the right reasons, and especially for the only one that truly matters: the music.
She is the one who helped me, and often saved me from my anxieties and my stage fright. Twist of fate: an overflow of compliments would stress me out way more than a demanding dancefloor.
44 years, and then one day, you slow down…
Not really by choice — health, strength, and that driving urge gradually fading away. These things happen, and you learn to accept them with grace as you approach sixty (f**k… two more years to go).
I’ve shared moments that belong only to those who were there to live them. No need to list them, no need to name names. Those who were there know (or "knowest").
It is, by the way, a fascinating phenomenon to see just how mysteriously selective some people's memories become over the decades. To claim today that I never did anything, never "helped," that nothing was brought to the table — it’s a delicious irony, and one that says a lot about those who carry it. I suppose there are convenient bouts of amnesia regarding stories that are nevertheless over thirty years old. But time doesn't erase the reality of facts, even if rewriting history clearly suits their own narrative.
Discretion has always been my leitmotif; putting myself in the spotlight was never part of the equation, far from it.
What’s done is done. It wasn’t always perfect (and thank goodness for that…), but it was always honest. No calculated moves, asking for nothing, expecting nothing. Just for the pleasure of making it good, so that people would leave with something — a melody, a memory, an emotion, a spark.
Jealousy and ingratitude have always been part of the scenery. It’s no surprise to anyone who hangs around or has hung around this scene long enough (and even more so today with social media). You learn to deal with it, and personally, I still smile at it with a detached, almost therapeutic amusement. We gladly leave the bitterness to those who have the time to feed it.
There won’t be another word said about this. But one thing is for sure: music, at least, never betrays you. My passion remains intact, shielding me from any bitterness.
Chapters never truly close when music is the one leading the dance 🎶
