On 10/2/1922 the first National Fire Prevention Week was proclaimed by President Warren Harding. October is Fire Prevention Month! And the week of October 4th - 10th is Fire Prevention Week this year.

The goal of Fire Prevention Month (and the week of October 4th – 10th) is to raise fire safety awareness and help ensure homes and families are protected. In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named the second week of October as Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. It remains the longest running public health observance in the U.S., dedicated to raising fire safety awareness.

Fire Prevention Week 2026 is all about one thing: charging smart. This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower”. This reminds us that lithium ion battery fires are on the rise, and simple habits can keep families safe. Use approved chargers, avoid charging on beds or couches, and unplug devices once they’re full. Let’s keep Tampa safe, one smart charge at a time.

Hey kids and their parents!!

This Saturday 🔥 Meet Little Mack — proudly on display at the Tampa Firefighters Museum.

A long time ago, a brave fire truck named Little Mack raced through Tampa to help firefighters protect the city. Today, he’s all cleaned up and resting at the Tampa Firefighters Museum, where kids can see him and imagine the adventures he had.

History can be fun when it’s this shiny.

This beautifully preserved 1949 Mack engine once proved that “old fire trucks never die,” and visitors can see it up close and learn how it helped shape Tampa’s firefighting history.

A piece of the past, still inspiring the present.

Today is a major milestone for the Tampa Firefighters Museum as we officially installed custom Indows window inserts throughout our historic 1911 building!

Indows are thermal window inserts that press into the inside of existing window frames to deliver the comfort and energy savings of double-pane windows without replacing the historic glass. By creating a tight seal, they block drafts, drastically reduce outside street noise, and protect our interior artifacts from damaging UV rays.

A massive thank you to the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Their generous grant funding helped pay for this upgrade, allowing us to preserve our museum's historic architecture while significantly lowering our energy bills.

Also, thanks to Jason Adorno of Historic Window Restoration for doing a great job ordering and installing the indows.

The Tampa Firefighters Museum is honored to stand alongside the Firemen's Benevolent Association of The City of Tampa, Tampa Firefighters Local 754, and the Tampa Fire Rescue Honor Guard as they attend the ceremony in Colorado Springs.

This gathering pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of firefighters across the nation. The ceremony will be broadcast live on Saturday, September 19, beginning at noon EST for all who wish to join remotely.

Among those being recognized this year is Fire Inspector Tammy Mira-Gulley, who passed away in 2025 from a job‑related cancer. Inspector Mira‑Gulley devoted her career to protecting the public and strengthening fire‑safety education throughout Tampa. As a board member of the Tampa Firefighters Museum, she championed preservation, storytelling, and community outreach. Her legacy of service and leadership will be honored in Colorado Springs and remembered here at home.
