I planted some tulips last fall in a new bed I made in front of the greenhouse, hoping for some blooms in time for Mother’s Day. However, the tulips didn’t open until it warmed up this week and a lot of them have short stems at about 4 to 5 inches long. So while they’re not turning out quite the way I hoped, the blooms are stunning!! Would you agree? 💐
If anyone would like a bouquet like this in the next week or so with 15-18 tulips (vase not included) let me know!

Finishing up most of the transplanting today in the greenhouse! Every couple weeks I feed everything with some fish emulsion while I wait for the last frost date before planting these outside. In a couple weeks some things will be ready to be pinched as well, in order to promote branching for more flower production.

I’d love to provide whimsy and color through flowers for your special occasions this summer! 💐 Let me know if you’d like arrangements for any of your celebrations: birthdays, anniversaries, photo shoots, showers, or milestones. I can work with you to create custom color palettes with whatever is in bloom in the garden.

Message me if you have a date or event in mind! At least 48 hours notification for a custom bouquet is appreciated, so that I can serve you best.

It’s been a busy start to the week while I took advantage of the sunny spring weather. I seeded several rows of hardy flowers, including native milkweed to attract pollinators. I also took advantage of this stretch of warm days to till in an additional section that will be seeded early June with zinnias, cosmos, and sunflowers since they all grow well in poor soil . 🌻
In the greenhouse, the snapdragons, Billy buttons and summer asters got transplanted into bigger soil blocks, but I was so impressed with their existing root systems in their tiny 1cm blocks.

The first couple dozen varieties of flowers are seeded and sprouting! Some of these start as seeds as small as a grain of salt, and grow to become floriferous, two foot tall plants in the garden by midsummer. I am always amazed at the promise of life held in a tiny little seed. Gardening is hard work, but so rewarding, and every spring I’m reminded of the reason I love it so much as new life pops up everywhere.

This year, I’m trying out a new method of starting seeds in soil blocking. This helps me reduce space in my greenhouse, and, most importantly, gives the seedlings a stronger start. Instead of getting root bound in the confines of a pot, the roots are air pruned and ready to spread out as soon as they are transplanted.

In a week or two, depending on the weather, I’ll be planting the first couple hardy flowers in the ground. In the meantime, I’m starting more seedlings inside under grow lights before transferring them to the greenhouse. These past couple nights temperatures have dropped fairly low, but my little space heater is just keeping up and the plants in the greenhouse are getting automatically hardened in the cool temperatures whether they’re ready for it or not!

This week’s reading - The Regenerative Gardener’s Handbook by Briana Selstad Bosch. I’ve been gardening all my life but there’s always so much more to learn! And wouldn’t you know, the soil food web is actually an intriguing subject. 🪏 👩‍🌾

A lot of behind the scenes work went into the flower field last fall to help boost soil nutrition and fertility. I added a mixture of animal manure and top soil from a local farm. I also experimented with cover cropping using winter rye to boost organic matter and enhance soil structure through the rye’s extensive root systems.
Gardening is my exercise, and I love it! (Ask my hubby… I would stay out after dark once the kids were in bed spreading manure into the beds with a pitchfork and headlamp.💪)
