Marguerite Riel (Monet dit Bellehumeur) was born in 1861 in White Horse Plains to a Cree mother and French father.

Her family earned a living through buffalo hunting and while assisting the women in harvesting the bison, Marguerite caught the eye of another young buffalo hunter, Louis Riel.

Louis and Margurite were first married by the custom of the country before their church wedding a year later.

Marguerite was a strong, devoted, and hard-working woman who raised all her kids, cleaned, cooked, and ran her household while struggling through poverty and supporting her husband who was often away fighting for Metis rights.

During the Northwest Resistance, a pregnant Marguerite and her children resided in the women’s camp at Batoche. After losing her husband, she headed back to St. Boniface.

Suffering through grief and illness, Marguerite lost her baby and contracted tuberculosis which claimed her life in 1886.

Today she rests beside her beloved husband in St. Boniface.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!
💐💐💐💐💐

05/09/2025

The first day of the Battle of Batoche was 140 years ago today.

What followed was a four-day battle between roughly 800 Northwest Field Force members and just over 200 Metis defending their rights and homeland.

Today, we honour the Metis men and women who bravely stood their ground at Batoche.
